Lui has an idea ... is it possible to use the ships radar and/or sensors to get maps of the caves? I could then send the maps to anyone with a hand computer ...

A good idea. We used it to scout that there WERE caves, and where the openings are. I'm not sure how good spaceship scanners would be going through hundreds of feet of solid granite. I think I would rule against that at this juncture

After about an hour's exhausting walking, you come to the spot of the cave marked 5 on your map. It is about 60 metres above the ground, but there looks to be a relatively easy boulder-strewn climb up to it

Okay, how about this then ... Use my telepathic abilities to scan the general area of the caves to pick up possible inhabitants?

Life detection sounds reasonable. This would cost 1+ 4(range-distant-500 m to 5km) = 5 points? Is that how you read the rules? ANd do you need to make a skill check, or is it automatic?

By my look-see of the text and charts, it seems to be based on point expenditures, thus, then automatic. I'm not seeing any target numbers to roll except when locating a psionic institute and determination of abilities.

Lui drops into a meditative trance, and stretches out his mind to the surroundings, further and further. He identifies the group but keeps going. There are myriads of life forms of the small variety, and a startling number of larger herbivores. There seem to be a few sleeping predators, including caves 2, 6 and 9 Lui's range went from caves 1-9

OOC :The predators are not surprising, we should be much better prepared this time around. Once I get the all clear then I will use my tools each time to see what we have found. If it will speed things up, feel free to play that part out for me using all the equipment at hand to investigate what is in each cave once given the all clear. I will be focused and they will be taking care of the dangerous things.

Assuming Lui communicates all this to you by radio, do you decide to clamber up to cave 5, or continue towards cave 6?

Lady Marie is fine with climbing up, but let's here from Corrigan and/or Westcoat also.

"Yeah, we can do this," Corrigan says. "I'll go first, someone cover me."

OOC: I will be seeing brumbar tonight, and find out if he is going to continue, or step down. In the meantime, Corrigan goes first. Does he climb all the way up while others watch, or do some trail a bit behind? We will assume Abigail is covering with the laser carbine

The rest should wait until we give the OK.

Yes, all the way up (unless interrupted for some reason).

While challenging, the cliff is not too dangerous as long as you take your time. At the top you see a tall, narrow and deep cave. The reading from Marci's scanners does not seem promising from the mouth of the cave

Looking out from the cave, can we see anything? Or just jungle canopy?
After checking that, Corrigan will enter, cutlass and pistol ready.

Besides the native avians in and around the canopy top, you don't really discern any features of interest
Corrigan enters the cave, Lady Marie now holding a lantern about two paces behind. It goes in about 50 feet, looks clear and bare

Once the all clear is given I will enter the cave and proceed to examine the cave checking mineral deposits, using the basic scanner and taking samples for additional tests of anything that looks promising. Looking for the goal item, but also for other metals/minerals/gems that would be valuable.

Looks like this one's a dud. Off to cave 6? You can probably do 6 and 7 and still get back to the ship for the evening

Yea, let's do 6 and 7, SOP unless something unexpected happens.

You clamber down carefully from this cave, and spend another hour slogging through the jungle. You get to the spot where the cliff splits, with the jungle floor having a part that rises above the cliffs that continue on the right, while climbing the cliffs on the left. This path leads to caves 6, 10 and 12. The other path leads to 7, 8, 9 and 11

With the path splitting are we able to still do both? I suggest starting with 6
