On a different note, I guess what to do next is completely up to you guys
Explore the jungle some more? Head back to Penzance and report? Decide to bring in and run a commercial mining venture? Blast off to somewhere else?
etc...

I need a crack at the library data aboard ship. We need to find an industrial world with a low law level and a high (-ish) tech level. Mining robots are the way to go here. They don't talk to strangers, they don't unionize, and they don't take coffee breaks.
We might need a heavy air/raft to get them into place, and probably to haul out the ore, but I think this plan provides the best mix of efficiency and security.
And if we could get a "portable" refinery, to at least start processing the ore, we could minimize our landings and takeoffs, thus minimizing our chances of being spotted. You can hide a lot under a jungle canopy...

It looks like you have found a xenotime vein of gigantic size near the back of the cave, radiating Yttrium and amost all the other lanthanides, including dysprosium. Depending how far down it goes, it could provide enough matter for nuclear power and laser weaponry and high-tech sensors for over 100 years, if it was able to be mined BTW, lanthanum is vital to the construction of jump drives

Marci looks around the little group and says, "I believe that we should make note of all features and coordinates, then continue exploring all the caves and see how extensive these ores are. We should take a good portion of samples and then head back and report. Unless of course this is the only ore we find and you think we can take it all in one trip. A bit more muscle and firepower is likely to be needed to get all or most of it off planet."

0202 Miscatoon B 665322-7 Gas Giant Non-Industrial
Starport Type B - Miscatoon starport is a good quality installation, with refined fuel available and facilities for annual maintenance and overhaul of starships. Most construction is focused on creating non-jump system defense boats. The starport itself is more a clearing port to allow the merchant ships of the two worlds Aquaria (0103) and Kalamari (0203) to band together and form ad hoc convoys with the MISC company escort ships (available at a price!) to protect against pirates when heading to Muskatoon (0101). For those not wishing to pay the cost of refined fuel, there is a gas giant far out in the system for refueling.
Planetary Size 6 - A medium planet, 6400 miles in diameter, and 20 100 miles around at the equator, with an axial tilt of 16 degrees. Days are 19.5 standard hours long. Miscatoon revolves around its sun once every 200 Terran days.
Atmosphere Type 6 - Standard atmosphere, excellent for Earth-standard lifeforms, this planet is very humid due to its closer proximity to its sun than is usual for an inhabitable planet. Temperatures can get up to 70 degrees Celsius at the equator, and the poles average zero degrees at best.
Hydrographic Percentage 5 - Equal parts land and water, the planet has four mostly vertical land masses broken up by oceans. Both poles are land-covered. The planet is almost total jungle/tropical rain forest, with the far north being heavily carpeted evergreens.
Population Size 3 - There is a loose coalition of trappers and scientists in an area just beneath the starport that hovers over the south pole. These approximately 3000 people live in log or pre-fabricated cabins and trap exotic beasts and sell their furs, or sell pets to rich connoisseurs on Muskatoon (0101). Living among them are biologists searching for rare drugs, zoologists, botanists and other scientists.
Government Type 2 - There are so few inhabitants that the government is a participating democracy. Four times per year, at the trapping HQ, a session is held where difficulties are brought up and laws are made
Law Level 2 - Only terrorist weapons (explosives, gas, undiscoverable personal weapons) and energy weapons are barred on this planet, but law enforcement is almost nil, and outside the 100 mile radius from the starport above, law level might as well be zero.
Technological Index 7 - High tech does not work so well on the hot, humid planet, and thus the technology used is similar to the rough and ready devices developed during Terra's Second World War through to the 1970's
Notes - Miscatoon is a virgin planet, unexplored and hostile - imagine the Amazon basin and rain forest multiplied 10 or 20 times. There could be untold riches, resources, medicinals, and lifeforms on the planet.

Question to the group.
“Politics is not my forte but what would be the ramifications if our leaders were to claim this planet?”

What are the laws regarding salvage or claims staked on mineral rights on this world? How do are 'Leaders' view such arrangements? Do we have any solidarity as a crew?
This is essentially a lawless world ripe for the pickings ... I say we do what we want and to hell with the southern colonists so far away from this claim. If need be, we take it and defend it by force against the colonists.
Just who are our Leaders anyways ... I forget? In any case they are not here and we might not be obligated to report this finding to them ... if we are, I suggest a 30-50% Finder's Fee.

There are no laws at all. The only people with a vested interest in this world is the Muskatoon Imperial Shipping Co-operative (MISC for short), based on 0101 Muskatoon, which builds the bulk freighters, liners, and luxury yachts for this corner of the sub-sector. They financed the starport, and any SDB boats that support it, and basically run it.
Coming from a pirate planet, it would be seen as a free resource to be plundered
I would say that is an accurate assessment
Eminently doable!
Lady Marie has been tasked with finding ways to improve the standing of the Plymouth city-state on Penzance by its ruler.

Let's take some good-sized samples with us, and as extensive of sensor readings as we can.
We can go on to do other things and let someone else mine this stuff, if we get a big enough finder's fee...

OOC: A lot of those ideas sound like a lot of fun and there are several directions that we could go, but consider Three of our number have a very strong (or could be expected to) allegiance to The Duke (unless the niece and nephew have other agendas) and M. Lui Wu is quite unlikely to stab his old buddy in the back.
Just saying.

I don’t think any of are suggesting, at least i’m not, t(at we break our alliegence to the duke. What i am suggesting is how can the duke and our home planet take over this planet, or settle it or just exploit the resources. As coffee suggests lets get samples from this cave, maybe check out another cave with this creatures in it to see if we they are linked to the deposits we are looking for so we can relate that to the duke. For a healthy finders fee of course

I was just exploring our options, and yes, if this haul is large enough we could end up considering a break in royal leadership. Happens all the time. That doesn't mean we ARE going to, it just means it's an option.
I also suggested the finder's fee. Again, 30-50% seems reasonable from where I sit.
Having said that, Lui Who exactly knows Lui form their youth? The Duke? Marcie? Lady Marie?
Sorry guys, I've been stuck on the ship for some time now ... lol.

I am going to be stepping down. I am finding the strain of online gaming too much with my changed work and life situations. I need to notify a few boards of my changes, but thanks for the fun I had here. I learned a lot Sorry to get everybody revved up again I get to the point where I am so stressed by the thought of even checking my boards that I don't want to do it anymore

I get to the point where I am so stressed by the thought of even checking my boards that I don't want to do it anymore That is a sure sign that you aren't having fun. And games are supposed to be fun. So, while I'll miss this, I'd much rather that you're taking care of yourself. Thanks for everything we've done here; it's been a blast!
