20,000 is nothing, I logged 50,000 just this week. Going to a non-earth planet that rotates really slowly is cheating!

I have been playing D&D since April, 1974 almost every week and since I retired, I have been playing 2-3 times a week, almost every week. No way he is at 20,000 hours. Even if he had 20,000 hours of D&D, that would not make him an RPG expert, and given what I have heard about Baldur's Gate, he is not a D&D expert either.
Besides, no one can declare themselves an expert, only other people can decide based on the evidence whether or not someone is an expert.

In response to The Semi-Retired Gamer 's OP; I would if I ran an Arduin OD&D game. Otherwise it would depend on the setting. <EDIT; Crimhthan The Great I only know you from your posts, but it is good to see another Old Tyme Murkhillian posting.> I get on here now and then. You should post more, you young guys are the future, those like me are nearly gone.

I don't know anything about 2E, but my Paladins are based on the REH character Solomon Kane. He is pragmatic, as at one point he accepts a shaman who opposes evil, but who is somewhat suspect himself, as an ally to fight a greater evil. He would kill the farmer for not being generous to hungry families, especially those with children.
This description of Solomon Kane by REH, to me defines what being a Paladin is all about.

I do not have Half-Orcs or Half-Elves. I just don't want that mix in my game.
However, as I have posted elsewhere, gnolls are a cross between goblins and trolls. Tromes are a cross between gnomes and trolls.

3. Generating characters 3d6 in order. Character should start as normal people. If you want straight 18s, roll it honest. Only a 1 in 101,559,956,668,416, that is 101 trillion+ folks. If you are playing with Extraordinary Strength and want to top roll then multiply the forgoing number by 100. Now we are looking at 10 quadrillion+. That illustrates just how flagrant the cheating is if someone has something like 18 16 13 18 16 14 and it was not rolled in front of the referee with the referee's dice. If you can roll all 18s with my dice in front of me, I am happy for you, but don't bring it in saying you rolled it at home. I've rolled ability scores so low I've been afraid the ref would think I had faked them. It happens, if someone rolled straight threes in front of me, I would not be surprised. Just wildly improbable does not mean impossible, I just want to see it.

I use the spell slots still. The fire and forget is only half of the system. Fire and forget is the Vancian part of the system, spell slots can be used for many different spells system, which is what you are doing.

OK so, 5. Standard leveling up 6. Vancian Magic I still use Vancian magic, but it's tied to a skill roll now. You said:

2. Death at Zero Hit Points
The game is supposed to be lethal, that is a feature not a bug.
I have had more TPKs than I could keep track of, they lead to legends and being a survivor of a near TPK leads to legends. There is no downside.

What were rules that you loved that you or your player really had to have in the game?
1. Rangers from The Strategic Review
A real manly character class and in my opinion what all fighters should be. Even starts off with two hit dice. Loved Rangers!

11. Bards from The Strategic Review
One the writeup was really long, very un OD&Dish.
Two they were seriously just over powered and poorly done.

10. No Monks
We despised monks as a very poor writeup and really an insult to Asians in my opinion.

9. No Druids
Druids are only NPCs in my game. Besides which no one ever wanted to play one.

8. I do not use Thieves - something I have in common with PD.
We were in our late 30s when D&D came out in 1974, we just didn't get into thieves when the Greyhawk supplement came out, but a couple of guys loved Paladins.

7. I don't use demons and devils and other things of that type from the Supplements
I just have no interest in having the players interact with supernatural beings in direct conflict, so I don't use them.

I agree with all of your points, but the first one. I use initiative and do it by individual. Due to the sheer amount of characters in play, each player rolls for their entire group of characters. Highest roll goes first, so that player resolves all of his characters at the same time. It goes to the next player until the end of the round. I personally don't use automatic level up. I require the characters to go through training. I don't use fire and forget magic, but have spellcasters use Spellcraft, Arcane or Spellcraft, Divine to cast spells. Failure means the spell doesn't go off and they don't lose the slot. Success means the spell is cast normally. What it does is that it allows me to use critical failures and successes for their spells like melee characters. OK so, 5. Standard leveling up 6. Vancian Magic

I am on Twitter now, yeah, go figure. Probably won't last long.
I posted this
Question for everyone, how do you define metagaming in D&D? Right now not asking if you are for or against, just how do you define it. (that will be later) My guess is there are a lot of different definitions.
To be clear, just post the definition, I want to discuss our opinions in another thread later with a poll.

If they have not seen you, then hide or leave. If you hide, then send the thief out as a scout to check them out, then you can decide on any of several other actions. If they have seen you, then hail them and open negotiations trying to avoid a battle. Depending on what happens next you might do any of several other actions. First try to negotiate while moving the fighters and cleric between the orcs and the magic-user with the thief drifting off to be able to return and attack from behind. If they attack you have a chance if the magic-user has and successfully uses sleep spell(s). If you can escape, then do so. If not talk with them and try to convince them to go somewhere and that you have to get some supplies and then you will be along. Hill giants are not very bright and tend to be gullible. The Magic-User and the Thief should try to disengage and stay out of harms way while the fighters and the cleric deal with this. The Cleric turns them and you fight the ones not turned. Keep that magic-user safe. Protect the magic-user who will hopefully be able to get sleep spell(s) off. Then fight the ones that are left. I've got to say guys that out of those who answered, this is the guy I want protecting my flank. Thanks!

Quote it and preserve it. That is pretty slick. Need to cultivate a field of it. It would be slow to propagate, about three years to get anyplace with it. It would take a lot of work to get very much of it.

Quote it and preserve it. Just guessing This blue vine has a gemstone shimmer to it. 1d6 feet of vine will be found. You can cut it into one foot lengths which can be *attached to a mage's ankle. It provides the following benefits: The ivy will absorb** 1d6 spell levels, this includes healing spells and such cast on them. After attachment the ivy will absorb*** one of the mage's spell slots at random. The vine may be planted in any temperate forest at least 100 feet apart from any other planting. The only grow 1d6 feet per year.*To remove the ivy from the mage's ankle requires the use of a remove curse spell and it must be cast by a 8th level or higher cleric. **The ivy will absorb up to 1d6 spell levels of any spell cast at the mage. This will prevent the mage from benefiting from healing spells and other beneficial spells as well as protecting from destructive spells. ***The spell slot absorbed will not be available to the mage as long as he ivy is attached. Hey mao , you never commented on the interpretation here. Hey mao, what did you think of my interpretation. Inquiring minds want to know.

When you are thinking about what monsters can do, don't forget some of the incredible things that real world critters can do. A Ruppell's griffon was sucked into a jet engine at 37,900 feet. Bar-headed geese fly well above and directly over Mount Everest which is 29,028 feet high. Lammergeyers have been observed at 27,000 feet. Whooper swans have been observed at 27,000 feet. A yellow-billed chough has been seen at 26,500 feet A mallard has collided with an airplane at 21,000 feet. Bar-tailed godwits have been spotted at almost 20,000 feet. So both cold tolerant, low oxygen tolerant and incredible endurance. Funny enough, but years ago when I made that OP at DF, they deleted it twice and I got in trouble.

My blood sugar is getting worse. My vison is failing and along with the central serous retinopathy, I think I will soon be out of work when my vision is too poor to work.... The central serous retinopathy has been knocked back with the natural treatment using 1100 PPM silver liquid in my eyes but I still fear blindness. My blood pressure is really doing it's own thing. Depression and anxiety from too much work, hurricanes and many other evils in this world. Really sorry to hear that eldrad, really hope you can get more effective treatment for your conditions. Sounds like the biggest factor might be the stress, sometimes that is what throws everything out of wack.

I'm not exactly sure why I'm posting here, because it's not a hill I'll die upon, but I'm in the 1:1 time keeping camp. The campaign, which is really misunderstood as a concept by most folks these days, has lots of moving parts beyond the current groups of players at a session - who may be a different group of players tomorrow night. Handwaivia doesn't cut it for me and isn't fair to any of the players. Just my 2 electrums .... JM. My campaign has been really consistent and rarely are all the current players not there for the game. Of course, at this point only three of us are still alive out of the original group. I do run a game for other family members, but they are on the opposite side of a very big planet, so we really don't have to worry about them ever meeting at this point.

I've been reading and following along TPD and I agree with you doing it on the fly is easier than writing it down cold by yourself. I get you are like me and could create at least half to all of that in a single 6-8 hour game session. Yeah, I am at my peak of creativity live in game. I think the most I ever did in one game was nearly 1,000 rooms/areas in the 24+ marathon game we ran once. But 200 or more in any 8 hour game that was in a dungeon is pretty typical. In the wilderness we have covered huge areas at times. In long games and good players, the amount of territory you can cover is incredible.

Stats are up guys! We hit exactly 80,000 posts for the life of the forum. It is a real long shot, it would be a hair over 63 posts a day to get to 100,000 posts by our next forum anniversary in early 2024. I try to throw in 365 posts this year, but I won't post on any regular basis. Just when I am up to it.
