Player/Character Support And Upkeep: We played it out a time or two and then automatically deducted that amount each visit to a town or city. We only spent additional money for things that were not on the basic list. Depending on the players, those basic lists were subject to change and growth. The Baronies part does require some fleshing out and it is a place to have some fun. Tourism, we interpreted this as the visiting nobles and royalty that one is expected to entertain, provide for and give gifts to. This was a drain on resources and not an add. Angry Villager Rule: never had to use it but always hoped a high level magic user would get way out of line. Other worlds, I recommend that this be made use of with the caveat of giving the players a way back, although they may have to really earn it. RE: Painting the Village Red. This post was a duplicate post with a different title. It was deleted, we were hoping that a new post would be created for the title, but it was not. Oh well, sigh!

Of course if you had Chainmail or Fight in the Skies you could just use them. This is another spot to house rule flying battles for simplicity if it suits your needs.

You can make this as simple or as complex as you want, I have run it all verbal between the players and the opponents, but that is an on the fly thing for certain one time things that you just have to be there for, there would be no way to write it down as to how to do it. Good for times when the encounter is for dramatic effect to scare the players with what could happen, but not to do any real damage. One way I have used it for a playful encounter with young dragons when the players are surprised and the dragons are having a little fun and then are gone.

The critical hits and hit location, bombing and other things here are a lot of fun for more serious encounters. It also points out how badly aerial attacks need to be considered in your design and defense of your castle. Yes you can use your magic users phantasmal forces spell as an aid to practicing with your ballistae.

Of course one such game is another Arneson and Gygax collaboration called Don't Give Up The Ship!

I did, but I never worried about it. We never had it come up in a game, so it was moot.

I recommend using the grappling and boarding rules as playing this out in a campaign great fun whether you are being attacked by pirates or mermen or something else or maybe the players are the pirates. I will have to post the way I have been thinking about handling healing sometime. That first die or two of healing can take a while unassisted, but all those other hits points can come back pretty quickly under the right circumstances. Doing this whole thing started me thinking about that and I might do something with it. This statement I have placed in bold if that does not stir your soul to take the game and make it your own, then nothing will and I weep for you.

@piper started this same thread multiple places and our thread rocks as by a wide margin the most active thread of the bunch. @piper posted this about 36 hours ago in another version of this thread and I was waiting to see if he posted it here and he has not so I will. Tentative cover. Both versions are 10-point ragged right sans serif: the electronic version will be in Arial, the PDF for POD purposes in Helvetica.

The thread you got that out of had less than a third the posts this one does. This is clearly the boss thread.

Even if he didn't deign to post it here, through the magic of the Internet, we have it and it looks way cool! I wonder if @piper is the artist? Hey @piper did you draw this? Don't be too hard on the guy, Wolf. For reasons most of us prefer not to go into, there are politico-social pressures on gamers who frequent these boards. I've faced them myself. I cannot understand why anyone on other boards cares who posts anywhere else but there it is. As far as the artwork? He's used Hero Machine to produce a similar cover for his Psionics supplement, this looks like it came from there, too.

I'll concur don't be hard on Piper, he has been gracious to allow us to post his content here. Like @gizka says, there are those who hate we exist here and posting here is enough to get banned elsewhere. I understand not wanting to become a pariah in the community - did I have harsh words for those who chose to leave to keep from being banned? Yes, but I am a hot head who was not happy with things at that time. That said I cooled off. Being a pariah is no fun in the real world or online so I don't begrudge piper or others choice now. So just enjoy his old posts here & frequent his blog and G+ where he posts often.

@gizka and Hexenritter Verlag you both have good points, so @piper if you are reading I take back the snark. That was out of line. As someone who was banned for being an inactive member (I had been a member for since 2007 with under 10 posts and I rarely logged in) I should have more sympathy. I didn't rejoin, since I was only going to lurk there anyway, but it did spur me to take a look here and I like it so this meets my needs to be here. I actually feel comfortable posting here so it has pulled me out of lurk mode after all these years.

Glad to have you Harry Wolf, I've been banned for association here at a certain forum and likely kept from being a member at another forum likely for that same reason. Unlike others because of my troubled past I try to not sweat it but if I am honest the injustice of it torks me off. But I am trying to put it behind me so we can rebuild Ruins of Murkhill. Which is why I now back people like Piper - i have nothing to lose, he does - i can't judge the dude. Also it is why I am supporting interesting projects like the Map Stamp thing & the Secrets of Blackmoor film project if only by spreading the word I will. The members here are good people, many older folk who played since the beginning & can impart wisdom to us younger folk. I love this place & i miss Piper and the other members who left. We are trying to make Ruins a welcoming place to people who want a wholesome place to discuss Old School RPGs, especially OD&D. We are the misfits & pariahs of the Old School RPG forums, but we can become more than that but it'll take hard work. But enough of me derailing the thread with my rambling and lets get back on topic; which reminds me to catch up reading on Piper's content on his blog.

Hero Machine 2.5 is pretty easy, 3 less so but this version gives a bit more flexibility.
I followed the d/l link for the Psion, it looks like he overwrote it with some sort of revision and its only 2 pages. I’ll see if I can track down the whole thing. He released it Creative Commons so I know he won’t mind.

Yeah, by 50 different posters collected into one document. I can see the title now, "A Poor Man's Guide To D&D". Or "It's a Miracle if Any Two People Agree." Be nice, I was.
