I just started watching At The Earth's Core for the first time in over a decade. It's based on the first book of Edgar Rice Burroughs Pellucidar series of novels featuring a hollow earth. The movie stars Peter Cushing. I read the first book so many years ago that I couldn't tell you how true the movie is to the novel.

I would love to have movies made of all the Pellucidar books faithful to the books with todays technology.

The Perilous Dreamer It wasn't too bad, but you could definitely tell it was made in 1976. The creatures weren't exactly great looking. I would most definitely be interested in a movie with modern effects.

Kind of off-topic, but I am really in the mood for Excalibur lately (the 1981 one).

Brilliant scene that shows everything I love about this movie. I don't know how they all did it, but the dialogue would make no sense in a naturalistic, "realistic" movie. Merlin appears instantly when the sword is broken to tell us what it means. Arthur instantly repents. The Lady shows up with the sword, whole again. Lancelot rejoices at being bested. And it all fits into a Youtube clip. But the whole thing works. It feels mythical and at the same time, real. The way the Lady's hands tremble as she pulls them away from the blade as Arthur takes the sword. That is a hundred times better than any CGI effect. What is happening is pure Faerie reaching into history, but the way it is done is perfectly real, almost too real, too familiar. Unbelievably brilliant movie. If my wife spends the night away sometime soon, I'm watching it.

All this talk of Excalibur had me in the mood to watch it again. I couldn't remember what streaming channel it was available through, so I searched for it only to discover it had been taken out of rotation. I'll be picking up a copy for my personal collection ASAP.

I was scrolling through Crackle earlier and found the Earthsea miniseries. It's been so long since I've read the books that all it did was make me want to read them again. I guess there are another 3 books after the original trilogy. I've read the first 4. I have no idea of the accuracy of this miniseries compared to the source material. I guess that's just more to add to the TBR pile. In addition to the trailer, several videos popped up expressing dissatisfaction with the adaptation. Maybe I'll watch some of them. Here's the trailer.

It's not a movie and I didn't see the need to start a new thread for TV series when both forms of media are very similar. It's about time to pause my Hulu subscription and rotate in another streaming service. I decided to binge watch Fear the Walking Dead to catch up where I left off at on my initial viewing. I was a big fan of The Walking Dead, so I was interested in the related show. I watched the first 2 seasons, but I didn't stick around for any further episodes. I absolutely hated the original cast and was holding out hope that it would get better. I gave up and was sure that it would be cancelled. The Walking Dead had a drop in interest after Negan and his baseball antics and I kept hearing that Fear the Walking Dead was getting better as time went on. I started with season 3 and watched seasons 4 - 6 after that. My conclusion is that right now Fear the Walking Dead is the better show. A healthy amount of the original cast is gone and now Morgan, Dwight, John, June, Al, and some more are featured. I haven't seen Season 7 yet but only because it isn't on Hulu yet.

The Semi-Retired Gamer I remember Le Guin expressing displeasure with an Earthsea adaptation some years ago, but I've never seen one. It sounds like it would be very hard to adapt for TV or film, but what do I know?

The Semi-Retired Gamer I remember Le Guin expressing displeasure with an Earthsea adaptation some years ago, but I've never seen one. It sounds like it would be very hard to adapt for TV or film, but what do I know? hengest It's been since the early 1990s since I read the original trilogy so I did some digging. It seems the major complaint of Le Guin was that the miniseries doesn't particularly look like Earthsea. Just about everyone in the minseries is light skinned with only a few exceptions. I don't think this is about racism or politics but simply that the characters do not match the author's vision. Several characters in the books are "brown", "black", or resemble real world island folk such as Samoans. Now I'm curious to read the original trilogy again after all these years to see how badly they adapted the first book.

Now I'm curious to read the original trilogy again after all these years to see how badly they adapted the first book. You're right. That is what I read, and I had forgotten the details. I think that first book is more or less perfect. I've read it in the past...five years or so. The tone of some of the passages (in particular, but really, throughout much of the text) is just...I don't know how to describe it. Masterful, I guess. I think it's a case of "art from adversity" or "art despite everything." Or "Art from nowhere." She didn't even want to write it especially, as I recall, but tried to come up with something when her editor (?) asked her for a YA book. And to me, it's the most perfect of her works that I've read.

I'm a big fan of superhero movies. I've seen a ton of them over the years. I used to follow several comic book series and I've played in and ran multiple supers rpg campaigns. Shoot, the first rpg that I helped write was a superhero game in the mid-80s with one of my school friends. I finally watched Shazam today after finding it in the $5 bin while I picked up some groceries earlier. I knew of Shazam before now, but I wouldn't have ever called myself a fan. I just couldn't help but remember the worm as a villain, the old live action series from the 70s, and the art from some panels of the old comic book. None of it was really my cup of tea. I was a little interested in this new movie but not really interested in it until I saw some teasers for BLACK ADAM. That's why I picked Shazam up today. I was surprised because I enjoyed it quite a bit. It is light-hearted and fun - which is appropriate since Billy Batson is a 14-year-old boy - but not just goofy and silly at every turn. Doctor Savannah looks much better than the bug-eyed goofball from the very old comics books, the evil worm looked good, and the other Shazam family members didn't look terribly either. Apparently, DC did a Power of Shazam comic book series in the 90s that updated a bunch of the stuff in the story and that's where much of the movie got its' inspiration, so I have a graphic novel to track down at some point.
