The young Man swallows a dry swallow before answering Gereon. He avoids looking over at the Elf. "No, thank you, sir. I'm only weary. I have been afoot for the better part of two days, when I had hoped to ride." The Elf's face begins glow with some unspoken thought. Gazing at and past the Man, he appears to be seeing something again in memory, and a private smile, showing amusement without malice, spreads across his face as if no one were watching. The Man appears to feel this smile, but continues looking at Gereon. "They call me Sor. A good name for me today, as I'm footsore at best. I seek whatever herbs you have to repel the foul creatures, and a poultice for both my feet, I expect." He looks down at his boots, then back up at Gereon. The Elf mutters very quietly to himself, still smiling, as if going over some bit of remembered speech. Gereon glances over at the Elf, "There is a place around the corner with a water trough for your horse and a place to tie him up if you want." Sor, there are a few benches over there in the grape arbor, I will join you there in a moment with the poultice, the herbs we will discuss later. If either of you are thirsty, there is the fountain, draw yourself a drink."
By the time Gereon comes back with the poultice, Sor is at the other end of the garden seated in the grape arbor. Gereon applies the poultice and wraps Sor's feet with large leaves and asks as he works, "Are you adventurers or looking for work? Then, "Wait, I need to attend to my other guests and we can talk later."
Returning to the group in the flowering arbor he says, "Now gentlefolk, how may I help you?

Sor notices that even before the poultice was fully applied, his feet were already feeling better.

Thomas:"Brother Gereon, thank you for seeing us on such short notice. Did the travelers get the attention they needed?". He pauses and nods in the direction of Sor and his companion before returning his gaze to Gereon.
"We are planning an expedition to the dungeon a short trip from here. We wanted to consult you about any information you may have as well as to ask if you had any apprentices in training that might need some real-world experience under their belts?...", pausing momentarily and glancing at Sor before continuing, "It seems that The One God may have blessed us already with a chance encounter to see if we can interest those fellows into joining our efforts.".
"Other than that, if there is some sort of sponsorship or funding that you can provide or assist with winning from the local Baron it would be most appreciated. I think that covers it or enough to get started. Brother Roderick, did I leave anything out?". Thomas holds his hands palm up as he waits on Roderick to answer.
OOC: Thomas speaks the highlighted words, but Sor & the Elf do not hear them because they are at opposite ends of the garden right now.

The Elf continues staring into his own thoughts, apparently giving no sign to the horse, but the beast clops slowly off in the direction Gereon mentioned.
Sor looks down at his feet, already feeling as if many miles have fallen from them. "I..." he begins, then peeks down again. The several scars on his calves and shins appear unaffected, but he no longer feels incipient blisters. He speaks to Gereon a word of thanks, then replies to Thomas. "We...I could do with experience. I have some, I think. But I could do with more." His expression changing from that of hesitant stranger to that of annoyed companion, he turns to the Elf. "Ferdinand. Ferdinand. Ferd-"
The Elf finally drops his expression of joyful amusement and seems to see at last the scene before him. "Oh yes," he replies. "You could do with more experience. Indeed."
OOC: Sor speaks the highlighted words, but Thomas does not hear them because they are at opposite ends of the garden right now. Noted the post for Thomas above also.
This may happen now and then, I will sort it out when it does. Still easier than splitting it into two threads for a few posts.
OOC [hengest]: Whoops, okay, thanks.

Taken from above: we will assume the gist of this is communicated now and then the other players can jump in after a response from Gereon.Roderick: I will go to Brother Gereon's and tell him about the dungeon, the fact that this town is the closest civilized place to it and that we seek his blessing before we venture out into the wilderness. I'll hint that the Vicar will most likely recommend him for recognizing the opportunity to sanction an expedition like this before some ragtag group of impious privateers and mercenaries will. I will also ask if he can recommend some, currently unemployed, but proper members of his congregation that would be helped with a job as porter, guide or camp-maker for our expedition.

Gereon seems a little nonplused at this and says, "I have heard of this dungeon enough that it is reasonable to believe it exists, they say it is about a month's hard travel to the southwest. These are hard times and brave men have to pursue such times, you certainly may have my blessings for your endeavors, especially if you will remember the poor when you return. There are many in this town who need employment and a successful foray into a dungeon could well provide you the means to have a holding and retainers."
He pauses, "Although I must tell you that would not be viewed kindly by the Baron. But his influence only extends a couple of days travel to the west. Once you are able to protect an area from the foul creatures that roam the wilderness, many may well flock to join you. As for the Vicar, he will not return for another three years and a bit. I have no means to send a messenger to him, when he returns he would be cheered to know that someone helped poor and that there is growing prosperity. But as for an official sanctioning of an expedition, that would not be done by the church. Now the Baron and others might "sanction" such a thing, but the price of their involvement would be high indeed."
"As for porters, livestock handlers (if you have any), camp-tenders and such, we have many who would seek such employment. If you don't have the funds to hire them, then a share of what you might find would suffice for many of them. We have strong young men and some older men who take what work they can get, often just for food. They have no training with weapons, but could be taught enough to guard a camp as you travel, various work implements can and have served as weapons for defense before and will again."
"Garlen, will also know those who would be willing to contribute food stuffs and some supplies to your cause in return for your patronage when you return. We also have some who know how to hunt and fish, which would help to feed the party as you go. I would suggest that you quietly organize and then leave quickly. I will prepare a few healing potions as will Garlen, I surmise you are not in a position to make a donation now, but that you would be kindly disposed to do so on your return."
"I can make a few visits here and there to help select some men for you, how many do you think you might need? As for supplies, you should make a list and I will see what can be done, it will not be much be it should suffice. Of course, there is the option of taking a few of the jobs that are available for such as yourselves, that our poor folk have not the skills to take and some have come to grief trying to do that. There are some jobs that you have likely not heard about, and that would allow you to be better equipped, again it should be done quietly and be sure to pay any taxes on your earnings. Failure to pay your taxes is a grave offense and the Baron can be rather harsh if he thinks offenses are deliberate."

Having drunk his fill, Ferdinand's horse walks back to within ten feet of his master.
Sor remains seated where he is, looking over at Ferdinand, who is no longer staring at him...

OOC - Work kicked my tail today. I'm posting tomorrow because if I posted right now it would be minimal effort and would resemble a goat roping rather than a decent post.

Thomas listens to the words of Gereon thoughtfully and lets it sink in for a deeper understanding of the situation at hand.
Thomas: "Thank you for your honesty and bluntness, Brother Gereon. We will take your recommendations and follow them. We would definitely be willing to take into service some of those willing and I think paying them out of our findings would be agreeable to everyone. If I may ask you to follow through with your offer to gather those interested so we can assemble quietly and leave quickly. ".
Pausing just a moment to gather his thoughts, Thomas continues nods towards Sor and his companion and asks, "What about those two? Do you know them? They look like sturdy folk?".

looking at finances and travel times we might be in trouble, Roderick and Biswil have a week of rations each and 11sp between them, a 4 week travel (and 4 back) would take a lot of foraging to make up for that, regardless of the amount of possible hirelings we take along, the type we are aiming for are not the type we expect to bring 8 weeks of lunch boxes with them.
Roderick: (after seeing Gereon) what say you? can we muster enough supplies for the trip for us and possible hirelings to make this trip and back? We might be able to forage along the way but that might make the tripe take longer.

Since you don't get the full synergy of being together at a table and all of this taking place in real time. I will try to be light fingered with it and lighter as the game proceeds. At a face to face game those comments would have been made a few minutes ago and instead of days ago. I think that warrants a little reminding that I would not do face to face. You guys can let me know how you feel about that (if you need to) by PM, for or against.

Sor glances down at his feet again, just for a second. He's already walking different.
Lowering his hand, he speaks. "Sirs, I thought I would say a word of greeting since we've come here at the same time." He pauses and looks to the side. "So this is the word of greeting." An expression flicks across his face and vanishes. "Ferdinand and I have come a ways. I should say he can be a good fellow-traveler." He pauses again, uncertain.

I should have been mounted--I was mounted--but that...didn't work out. That's why I was as ragged as you saw me when we came to this place. I sensed many creatures at night. They didn't bother us, but I wanted herbs for protection. Ferdinand has no fear of anything, but as you can see, he is not a Man like me." He takes a breath. "You have a plan, then, for when you leave?"

We could use the help of sturdy individuals like you two..." absent-mindedly distracted for a moment before continuing, "...for an equal share of any gains, of course.". Thomas waits patiently for a response.
