A little Basic Background Info:
Town Name Chaiftfalls A walled town. Immediate area is grasslands with clumps of trees and fence rows, outside the cleared fields is temperate forest. The town is on the west bank of the river that runs northwest to southeast. At this time of year is should be running nearly bankful (about 5o feet wide) but the water level is low and only about 25 feet wide. About a half mile north of town is a 50' waterfall.
Population Approximately 4900; mostly human with a few elves, dwarves and hobbits. At the north end is the manor house of Baron Liam Farbridge It has a large, more formidable wall enclosing all sides, including the town side. He has a warm relationship with the merchant class and is vested in keeping trade flowing. He is friendly towards returning adventurers who, shall we say, are generous when they pay their taxes.
The town watch are paid by the Baron to whom they owe allegiance, but "rented" by the merchants.
The Green Flagon Inn: the merchant's tavern. The Drunken Cat: An better commoner's tavern. The Hero and Purse: A shabby commoner's tavern.
The country name is Croania. Chaiftfalls is located in a large western bulge of the country and has frontier to the North, West and South. The main portion of Croania is bounded on the north by Wustax (an ally at the moment), by Praoria to the south (with which they quarrel from time to time and by Vethurg to the east who mainly does not get along with anyone for very long. The only thing that generally keeps the peace is the various kings love of profit from trade. There are other kingdoms beyond these, but few know anything of them.
Croania's King is Camdyn Dalton Thorir Varma Arquitius the IV

Spoke with Semi and he agrees that it seems most probable that as Bosco makes it his business to be nosey, he is at least familiar with all the PCs. In the pursuit of easy coin, he introduces them all to each other and relays the current rumors/job opportunities (or heists/scams - same difference to him.)
... somehow he needs someone other than himself to pay for drinks at The Hero & Purse, not because he's short on silver; but one does not accumulate wealth by spending it - even should it be for an investment.

Richard (known for being about action rather than words) says, "That troll job really appeals to me. He wants a small troll or a piece of it. ".
Pausing, he looks around momentarily and spreads his arms apart about chest high.
"Besides, it should be easier dealing with one thing rather than a whole raiding party for a caravan. What do you guys think?".
Thomas "The One God encourages me to serve. All of these jobs should prove fruitful and fulfilling.".

1. Someone, someone knows claims they heard chanting late at night in the ruins of a long forgotten keep about 20 miles to the northeast.
-- Bosco: "Who was last to rule/claim the keep and why would it be long forgotten by anyone?"
An old man (very old) recalls that as a small boy he heard something about it, but it was old and long abandoned even then. He says, "Hard to remember much when a man's throat is so dry and parched." And he looks toward the kegs behind the bar.

2. There are rumors of impending war with a kingdom on the eastern border (4 weeks travel) and possible conscription.
-- Anexos: "Who rules these lands? Are these lands divided in a feudal manner and, if so, who governs therein? Who is the Kingdom to the East and why is war impending?"
See above Background, also war is always impending and only once in the last 30 years were troops called up.

As the thin voice of the old man slowly drifts away against the gentle murmurs of the tavern crowd, Bosco stares blankly into space, exhaling blueish hued smoke through his nose.
Bosco: "Indeed. I wonder how the One-God feels about serving us all a drink ..."

It was told that a very wealthy merchant built that keep thinking to start his own town, but this site being on the river won out after the trouble. One night shortly after harvest a very pale man, showed up a little after midnight, he had a horse and two pack mules, claiming to be a travelling tradesman. Being roused from sleep, they let him in and after the necessities they all went off to bed.
He took a couple of long pulls on his ale, then continued, "When morning came the stranger was no where to be found, the horse and pack mules were still in the stable and the merchant, his wife and children were all found dead in their beds, all with fang marks on their necks and drained of blood."
He paused again and took another pull on his ale and shuddered a little, then said, "They hurriedly built a funeral pyre and burned the bodies, then they stripped everything of value from the keep that they could easily transport and then hurried away to the then tiny village of Chaiftfalls, having done all they could do for the master. No one ever went back, once a vampire has been invited in, he can enter any time he wants. From that day to this, no one will answer a knock on the door after night falls. There were said to be storerooms under the keep, way too much to carry away in a dozen trips, but no one dared go back."
He took another long pull on his tankard and then finding it empty cast an expectant look at Thomas.

Thomas holds out the coin for the barkeep and says, "One more for my friend.". The old man takes a long pull from his tankard and gazes fondly at it for a moment, then begins, "Who's to say if anything in those storehouses, if they existed, still remains. I've not heard anything one way or the other on that. As for the vampire, those foul creatures are said to be immortal, unless a stake is driven through their heart and the head removed and then the mouth stuffed with garlic. They say that will immobilize it while you wait for dawn when you can expose it to the morning sun and watch it turn to dust in the cleansing light. That is what they say is the only true way to banish a vampire."
The old man takes a few sips and looks sad for a moment and a tear rolls down his cheek. Then he rallies and says, "When I was a young man, there was a girl on one of the farms near the ruins, I used to call on and one day when I went there, I found the farm abandoned. No one was there, the door of the house stood open, nothing living remained. Every four or five years, for as long as anyone can remember that has happened. Now no one lives within several miles of that keep. The road no longer goes near the old keep, whoever started the rumor of the chanting might needs explain what they were doing out there at night. No lads, you don't want to go out there at night, it takes an old experienced hunter to fight a vampire and none like that are around here."
He brushes away his tears and drains his tankard, saying, "Forget what I told you, you will only come to a bad end." With that he moved away and sat down in a darkened corner.
As you ponder that, you hear someone mention that dungeon rumor.

As you ponder that, you hear someone mention that dungeon rumor. Rickard and Thomas slowly turn towards each with a knowing glance. Neither of them has to say anything to realize they are both thinking the same thought - we better get some more training under our belts before we set out to face that vampire. Glancing around the nearby area Rickard looks at Thomas and says, "How about we get some more information about the dungeon?'. Thomas responds by saying, "I know you are a man of action but that's a wise choice, brother!" as he lets out a quick chuckle. The brothers set out to find the person discussing the dungeon.

Two people enter the tavern, the travelling types by the look of it. "This is where our folk rest in between travels", proclaims one of them, a middle aged man, from below his bushy moustache. Looking around the room he adds: "may St. Christopher bless your travels" and walks to an empty table; "may we?" he askes the proprietor before he sits down.
"This is where they tell the stories?" rings the voice of the mustachioed traveler's companion, crouching cross-legged in the chair besides him. "This is where they tell the stories of their travels", replies the cleric of St. Christopher," but first we eat and drink." Roderick then waves for the serving maid to bring some wine and food while Bilwis examines the room and inhabitants with great interest.
Brother Roderick van Brederode, cleric of St.Christopher, patron of travelers, and Bilwis, a spidery slender elf with bright blue eyes, pale skin and wild light green hair have entered the tavern.
Skipping ahead; if Roderick hears about the story of the vampire he is very interested, not only because of the harm the vampire did but also because of the distrust it causes in folk; apart from the vampire's direct victims there might be numerous travelers dying because folks along the way don't want to take the chance of being murdered by vampires.

As the brothers gaze around looking for conversation about the dungeon, the attention of each is caught by their own interests.
Thomas steps towards Roderick and extends his hand in a greeting and says, "I see a fellow Acolyte is in this place and thought I might introduce myself. I am Thomas and I serve The One God. I am here with my brother in search of adventure. What brings you here?".
Rickard approaches Bosco and raises his right hand in the informal greeting of men-at-arms and says, "What have you heard so far, friend?".
OOC - Unless there are any objections, I'm operating under the assumption that the Brothers know Bosco and Anexos like we previously discussed. If this won't work, let me know.

Bosco: "Enough to know trying to steal vampire treasure is alwaya a bad idea and more than a pain in the neck. That aside, little more than goat-tending for fat merchants."
Anexos, whose great stature made Bosco's diminutive frame seem smaller than a yearling child's by comparison, sat quietly, watched and listened. It had only been a span of a few hours since he had wandered before the gates of Chaiftfalls and he knew little of its comings and goings. The strange, slender being that had recently entered the tavern drew his curiosity for a moment - in much the same manner of a glimpse of a nearly forgotten dream.
Bosco considered the salute given to him with distaste. Fighting-men were but pawns in games that were as neverending as they were unwinnable. Adventurers and Delver Scum were often drawn from those unwilling to play such games - though truth be told, the were almost equally drawn from heaps of the foolish. Bosco saw himself as a professional thief- one not cut from the fabric of fools nor the commoner's cloth of Fighting-Men. Utilizing all available resources of stealth, gathered information, and strength of arms when necessary, Bosco believed he could surpass the confines of the game; ascending beyond mere pawn or king - becoming a true grandmaster.

There has been some talk of an unholy Vampire. If what I've heard and the fear of those around us is based on facts, then it might be a fools' errand until we can gather greater numbers and greater weapons.". Thomas shrugs and then continues. Turning back to Bosco, Thomas says, "I've heard whispers of a dungeon. What say you about this place or what you've heard?". Bosco produced a voluminous cloud of blueish smoke, as if to preface what he was about to say, but abruptly the white haired giant beside him spoke. Anexos: I have been here but few hours and have already heard talk that none have returned from this distant place. Yet I wonder, if none have returned, how is it said there are great riches within this place? Bosco: Thom, this great lout calls himself Anexos. Aside from his peculiar appearance, he claims to be a Hugh like yourself and knows of arcane secrets - but little else. The Hobbit turned on his stool and peered about the establishment with eyes as keen as any raptor. Bosco: It would seem Brother Rick is recruiting fresh blood. He frowned slightly and gave way to a sly grin. Bosco: What jobs are you two squirreling? This far away dungeon is it? We need more to go on than whispers and talk. JM.

As you sit and chat, you hear snippets of conversations around you.
One man says, "I hear that the mage wanting the troll is offering high wages, 20 SP per day and a whole GP each on delivery of the troll, I don't know though, trolls are vicious, they don't stay dead and they are impossible to keep chained up. He is going to have to be a lot more generous than that with his coin."
You also hear, "All the merchants are the same, too cagey about the wages and they are all trying for bargain rates. It will be like it always is, in a couple of days they will realize they have to bid against each other and things will get real. We all have to stand together and insist on a bonus, if they make it through with most of their goods."
At yet another couple of tables, you hear, "I heard this from one of the guys who operates the bellows for the sword smith. Those strangers who bought supplies and headed out in the direction of that dungeon we heard about, they first visited the baron and then bought supplies. They paid with silver coins with strange marking and a few gold coins with the same strange markings. Seems they made it there and back after all. Might pay better than these other things, on the other hand, I've heard many tales about some mighty scary things in dungeons."
What do you do?

Thomas: "Did you guys hear that? It seems like some explorers have made it to the dungeon and back!".
Looking around, Thomas is trying to surmise which nearby table said that.
Thomas: "Maybe we can talk to some sort of historian or lorekeeper in this town after we talk to the people discussing the dungeon?".

The Hobbit's brow furrowed as he drew on his rolled weed. He then pointed forward, gesturing with his cigarello as to draw his word in the air with blueish smoke.
Bosco: Your brother and his recruit need to petition their church to formalize an expedition to this dungeon and approach the baron in an official capacity to help fund and man this venture. We act in supervisory role in the expedition on account of our experience as veterans and arcanists - <looking at Anexos and the elf.>
He puffed again, staring into the cloud of ether above their table.
Bosco: Of course, both the church and the baron will want the lion's share of any treasure, so we'll have to secure clauses in the contract for our well being and profit ...
He drifts off and focuses his gaze at Thom. With a grin and a wink he says:
Bosco: What say you?

The Hobbit's brow furrowed as he drew on his rolled weed. He then pointed forward, gesturing with his cigarello as to draw his word in the air with blueish smoke. Bosco: Your brother and his recruit need to petition their church to formalize an expedition to this dungeon and approach the baron in an official capacity to help fund and man this venture. We act in supervisory role in the expedition on account of our experience as veterans and arcanists - <looking at Anexos and the elf.> He puffed again, staring into the cloud of ether above their table. Bosco: Of course, both the church and the baron will want the lion's share of any treasure, so we'll have to secure clauses in the contract for our well being and profit ... He drifts off and focuses his gaze at Thom. With a grin and a wink he says: Bosco: What say you? JM.Thomas nods while listening and says, "Yes. That's exactly what we should do. The only question is if all of us go to the local temple first & then the Baron or do myself & Brother Roderick handle the local priesthood while you guys speak to the Baron...".
