Xul is the name of the world in the campaign setting of my personal main RPG project. The name itself is taken from ancient Sumerian, supposedly meaning "great" or "evil" which I thought could be suitable for a world rooted in the sword & sorcery tradition. It's a savage world, primitive and exotic, construed with the purpose of being the scene of action for pulpy adventures.
I've intentionally chosen to paint the world with rather broad strokes, as opposed to more detailed ones, partially because it allows me more creative freedom as I develop the setting further, and it also leaves room for potential referees to customize it to fit the adventures of their own gaming groups. Doing so also allows me to focus on the feeling of the setting, rather than the facts of it. At early stages of work on this project I had an almost simulationist agenda, but I more or less abandoned that path. Simulationist games can be rather cool, but I felt it wasn't quite right for this project. Intentionally I wanted the learning threshold for this setting to be kept low - being somewhat familiar with Conan by Robert E. Howard, the Den comics by Richard Corben, John Carter by Edgar Rice Burroughs and some works by H.P. Lovecraft should be sufficient to grasp the concept of Xul.
As opposed to many of my earlier settings, usually ending up with varying pseudo-medieval, Eurocentric worlds inspired by a mix of Middle Earth, Hyboria and Magnamund, I set out to do something different. I switched the sources of inspirations from the Middle Ages to more ancient times, and geographical focus from Europe to the Middle East, Africa and Asia, preferring pulpy sword & sorcery to high fantasy. Simultaneously, I abandoned the Tolkienesque heritage as well as the traditional demi-humans from more generic fantasy settings. Instead, humans became the default race for PC's, and other humanoids are represented by insectoids, lizard men, serpent men, arachnoids, ape-men and their likes. Monsters include giant animals, pre-historical beasts, dinosaurs and a selection of undead, as well as some lovecraftian inspired horrors.
"Familiar yet strange" is a theme that can be applied to a lot of aspects of Xul. Many parts are reminiscent of our own world, but found here in more or less tweaked versions, enhancing the insight and understanding of the setting for players and referees alike. When describing the setting I rely heavily upon archetypical features and exotism. The world should always be perceived as dramatic and exotic - vast deserts, enormous swamps, steaming jungles, overgrown step pyramids, eons old ruins etc., and never bland or mundane. The bottom line is to make the world an exciting and interesting backdrop for the PC's adventures.
In the center of attention for this setting, at least initially, is the continent called Azarak. The Levanturian empire is possibly the greatest of the human nations, ruled by the empress, sitting upon the throne of jade in the palace in the Forbidden City. The imperial legions have conquered many smaller nations, incorporating them into the Empire as provinces. Ancient Rome as well as Egypt and Mesopotamia have all served as inspirational sources here. Southwest of the Empire lies a gigantic swamp with scattered and overgrown ruins from long forgotten civilizations, now populated by lizard men. In the southeast the great Shaharanyan desert is to be found, scarcely populated by nomadic tribes and insectoids, usually only crossed by heavily guarded caravans employing giant reptiles as beasts of burden. Directly south of the swamp and the desert the Black Kingdoms are situated - the rich and powerful Aqbaria, the cannibal kingdom of Zambessinia and the great and proud nation of Nubitania (think "feudal Japan but African" and you get the picture) among the most notable. East of the Empire is the Amaleyan mountains, with turban wearing and scimitar wielding warriors populating places like Khorustan and Arakistan. North of the Amaleyan mountains nomadic tribes herd their reptilian cattle across the great plains. And in the far, far east the City state of Quantoun is to be found, a melting pot for merchants, explorers, thieves, smugglers and pirates alike.
This is just a brief overlook of the Azarakian continent - there are lots more features to be included and expanded later on. I've also started sketching three more continents, each with its own special take on the setting, adding further flavor. Up north there will be a polar continent, with added elements of horror and sci-fantasy (think "At the Mountains of Madness" with a touch of fantasy). Southeast of Azarak there will be another continent featuring a few fortified city states (the only civilized part, really) as well as a radioactive desert with abandoned domed cities, a necrocracy and possibly a realm of developed ape-men, adding a sense of post-apocalypse. Also, a partially sunken continent across the sea west of Azarak will, among other things, allow the PC's to venture on underwater adventures (think R'lyeh, or the myth of Atlantis). And I still plan to incorporate some flying islands and airships somewhere on Azarak...
Simultaneously as I work on this setting, I also try to work on an accompanying set of rules of my own creation. On this board I will primarily focus on the setting, at least initially. It's a work in progress, names and features may be altered, and work is slow due to real life commitments, but it's a labour of love!
Tune in and turn on - more info will follow...

Appendix N
This is my personal "Appendix N" for this particular project. I thought I'd post it here to shed some light over the sources of inspiration for Xul. The list will probably be revised and expanded later.
Art:
Alfredo Alcala Boris Vallejo Frank Frazetta Gustave Doré John Buscema Michael Whelan Richard Corben Rodney Matthews
Books:
Clark Ashton Smith: The Zothique cycle H.P. Lovecraft: Assorted works Michael Moorcock: Primarily the Elric-books R.L. Asprin (ed.): Thieve's world, primarily the first anthology Robert E. Howard: Primarily the Conan-stories, but also King Kull
Comics:
Den by Richard Corben Savage Sword of Conan (different artists and writers)
Movies:
10,000 B.C. (2008) Apocalypto (2006) Beastmaster (1982) Conan the Barbarian (1982) Conan the Barbarian (2011) Conan the Destroyer (1984) Dune (1984) Gladiator (2000) John Carter (2012) Prince of Persia - the Sands of Time (2010) Red Sonja (1985)
Music:
Dead Can Dance: Spiritchaser Electric Wizard: Witchcult today Future Sound of London: Lifeforms Goblin: Suspiria (soundtrack) In Slaughter Natives: Enter now the world King Crimson: In search of the crimson king Original Soundtrack: Conan the Barbarian Peter Gabriel: Passion (soundtrack) Raison d'être: Enthraled by the wind of lonelienes SPK: Zamia Lehmanni (songs of Byzantine flowers)
Roleplaying Games:
Carcosa Coriolis Fantasy! Old School Gaming Fighting Fantasy gaming books Lone Wolf gaming books Searchers of the Unknown Svavelvinter
(The games mentioned above are more inspirational for my work on the rules rather than the setting though).
TV series
Marco Polo (2014-) Rome (2005-2007)
Of course there are many more sources of inspirations than the above mentioned. However, I'd say the most important ones to influence the conceptual design of Xul would be the art of Frank Frazetta, the Den comics by Richard Corben, the Conan stories by R.E. Howard, the John Carter movie as well as the Zothique cycle by C.A. Smith and the works of H.P. Lovecraft. I think those pretty much sum it up for me in a good way.

Just a minor update about my work on the Xul campaign setting. I'm currently trying to type down overviews covering different areas of interests concerning this world building of mine. This is supposed to feature entries on: Bestiary of Xul - brief overview of the different monsters, animals and races the PC's can encounter. Not a very friendly bunch, I must say... Magic of Xul - some thoughts about how magic works in Xul. No standard spell lists - it's all ritual based, sometimes quite vile sorcery. Magic can be quite powerful, but also very, very dangerous... I'll also try to include some thoughts on different ways magic can be dealt with in a campaign. Religions and cults of Xul - well, pretty much what it sounds like. Some information about different gods, and thoughts about how I'd like religion to be handled in Xul. Geography of Xul - some more information about the countries and cultures of Xul and its different continents. This will most likely be a post that will be dynamically expanded with time and progression of the work. Art of Xul - I intend to create a thread dedicated to my own artwork depicting Xul - images that I plan to create to use as illustrations when I finally (hopefully!) will be able to create a coherent document. I'm also considering posting some artwork that has inspired me as I've developed my setting. Those are the entries I'm currently looking at, but there will probably be more areas to cover later on. I'm also thinking about making an annotated version of my "Appendix N", posted above. So now you know what I'm up to, at the moment!

Well, your source list is impressively multimedia, and I'd like to see an annotated version that demonstrates how music etc. find their way into the setting (assuming that there's something there that can be articulated).
Pure sword and sorcery is not something I'm hugely interested in running but it's a blast as a player and I would certainly give this a shot if it were dangled before my eyes.
Interesting that you're not going for the standard spell list either; might we compare reasons?

Interesting that you're not going for the standard spell list either; might we compare reasons? Thanks, Von! I'm currently working on an annotated version of the list of inspirational sources, since I think that could possibly shed some more light on the origins of this setting, as well as how I'd like to convey it. Music is the most difficult area, most likely, since musical taste is so personal. Some people like to have music in the background when they play, others don't - and what some perceive as music others perceive as noise... But I still wanted to include the musical aspect in my list of inspirational sources, even though books, art and comics have had a much more direct impact on my creation. This was made for two reasons: first, the mention of music that I personally find inspirational when I'm working on this project, to get me in the right mood, and secondly to give some examples of music that I think could be suitable as background music for actual play (if enjoying that kind of music, that is...) Actually, I haven't run any pure sword & sorcery campaigns before, but since I feel I've started to prefer that over high fantasy more and more, I thought it could be both fun and interesting. But perhaps it's not that "pure" anyhow, since I intend to include some references to weird, science fantasy and horror as well. Magic then... Well, I've always liked magic in RPG's, but I've never encountered a system that I like to 100%, nor have I been able to develop one of my own. Standardized spell list can work out fine for me in certain settings or campaigns/adventures, but for this project I didn't think it would be suitable. I found some inspiration in the spell lists of the Conan d20 RPG (despite not being a d20 player), and then I read an article about adventures in the Hyborian age with some notes on handling magic that I found quite useful. Reading some material about magic in Unknown Armies (never played that either) also proved rather inspirational. But I guess a relieving moment was discovering how magic was portrayed in Carcosa. I want magic to be dangerous, and I want it to be focused on rituals. Pretty much in the vein of how it's portrayed in the stories of Conan, or Elric for that matter. I've never tried PbP before - participating in the Dun Kells Risk campaign will be my very first attempt. But I've become more and more interested in trying it, and I must say that I'm very tempted in trying out adventuring in the Xul campaign setting that way. That, however, is quite tricky at the moment, first and foremost since I develop my own original set of rules for this campaign setting, not associated with any other specific game. These rules are yet to be written down... and even when they actually are written down, my next problem would be that no one is familiar with it... I could possibly think of trying some sort of BRP version, since that is the rules system I'm most comfortable with, but I'm mostly rooted in different Swedish versions, and on top of that it's not quite the sort of system I have in mind... I've even toyed with the thought of trying out some minimalist rules, in order to more easily attract potential players, like Searchers of the Unknown or Barbarians of Lemuria, but since I've only read those games, never actually played or ref'ed them, I feel somewhat insecure about that... Well, well... I guess we'll have to see what happens...

Here in the US, it is copyrighted by you as your create it, whether on paper or here on a webpage. I would love to see you publish it. Are you writing this up in both languages? You might use a lite-beginner-version or simplified version of the game for your first pbp and then as the players get used to it, gradually add in the full rule-set.

Well, initially I only thought of writing it in Swedish. But hanging out on the ODD74 board and later on here as well made me think again... My original notes are in Swedish, naturally, but then I've started writing some parts in English with this board in mind. At the time being, I'm considering writing it in both languages, actually. Possibly writing it in Swedish first, and then translate it. I think the quality of the text might benefit from doing so. And I've also considered doing as you suggested - perhaps getting a lite version and try it out. A lot of the material (both setting and rules) is almost ready to use (but unfortunately still in my head, not on paper or computer...), but other parts need to be worked out more. Hmm, come to think of it, maybe I'll post a (very) brief summary of the rules, just to let you guys in on what it's all about...

Looks like you are getting close to starting a second thread and starting your campaign forum, so just let me know when you are ready. Yes, I actually feel that I'm a bit closer to start more threads and eventually request a campaign forum of my own. I think I'd better get some more material written down first. Right now I'm bursting with creativity, and it's quite frustrating not having enough time to work it all through. There's a few design choices I'll have to make concerning the rules, but once they're done I'd like to share some info on those since I think it could be fun to let you guys in on that, and it might be fruitful to get some constructive feedback as well. Then there's a lot of material about the setting itself that I haven't had the time to write or post about yet, and lately I've had lots of new ideas as well. I'm really looking forward to tell you more about the different provinces of the Levanturian empire, the strange bird-people of Quetzaptolia, the shunned high plateau of Tsun, the ape-men of Zarkovia, the airships crossing the Sea of Fog with it's floating islands, the nomads populating the Grass Sea where they herd their reptilian cattle, the tribes of lizard-men around the ruins of step pyramids in the giant swamp of Kher-A-Kosh, the weird necrocracy of Noor, the mysterious domed cities in the Radiant Desert... and much, much more...

I certainly hope you are recovering quickly from your previous illness, friend!
Regarding your campaign... This is really awesome stuff bro!!
I want to play an Amaleyan nomadic horse-fighter and battle the snake-men!! But I'd better bring a stout bow, to fend off those giant animals, and a fleet horse to evade the dinosaurs!!
Seriously, wonderfully imaginative stuff here that sounds very fun to play in!
Exalt!

Seriously, wonderfully imaginative stuff here that sounds very fun to play in! Exalt! Oh, I'm quite fine now, thanks! I've just been really busy lately - more so than usual, I might add... My kids were ill again and now I'm having a couple of rooms redecorated so everything is a mess around here with all my books, records, games and movies boxed at the moment... I'm also in the middle of making new art to be published - I'll be featured with an interview and three new B/W line art pieces in a Swedish OSR fanzine coming out next week, and I just recently finished a full colour pic to be used as a cover for an adventure to be published in a game magazine here (later this spring, I think), and that will also be published as PDF files eventually (both in English and Swedish). Right now I'm making five B/W monster pics to be published in an American OSR book - and I hope to be able to contribute some more art for tetramorph to be used in his Dun Kells project as well. Then there's all the other real life commitments too... So, pretty busy! Hopefully I'll be able to work some more on my Xul setting when things cool down a bit. There's a lot more background material to be written down, and I'm tampering with the rules as always. And it would be cool to finally get some pics done for Xul as well... Anyway, an Amaleyan fighter sounds fun - but I've pictured them riding camels instead of horses! I'm actually not sure there will be horses in Xul - I'm thinking about replacing them altogether with giant reptiles, ostriches, camels and pterosaurs... Someday, somehow, I hope to be able to try out playing in the Xul setting in a PbP game... We'll see what happens... Have an Exalt yourself, merctime, and thanks for your kind words!
