I have read the original novel several times over the past 30 years, and I enjoyed all of the Frank Herbert sequels as well. I also play the excellent Dune boardgame and I like the David Lynch film for 80s nostalgia reasons.
The new movie is visually interesting. There is a very cool scene of the Sardukar home planet. But I really don't feel any need for another Dune movie, to be honest. I wish that director Villaneuve would use his considerable talents to make something original.

I started it several times over the decades, but just couldn't handle the glacial* pace of Herbert's writing. But when I joined Audible.com, I decided to give it just one more try and I'm glad that I did. At least for me, his books work much better as tales told TO you by a skilled narrator. I've now listened to the first four and plan to finish out at least the initial set soon. I read the original trilogy of Dune, but I would never re-read them again, because while I loved the stories, I can only say I wish he was influenced by ERB and REH, at least a little bit. |

OK, I saw Dune last night on the 2nd and I loved it! Some people have claimed that the movie was slow and boring, but for me the whole 2 hours and 35 minutes seemed like a half an hour. I would not cut anything. The only thing I did not like was the job the sound guy did with the dialog. I could only understand about 10% of what was spoken parts were drowned out by other sound, parts were just soft and to me sounded like mumbling. The former were inexcusable and the latter were mostly due to my hearing loss. I am going to have to try to find a way to get hearing aids. I may try the trial of HBO so I can watch it with captions.
That said, I still loved the movie and although it has been 53 years since I read the book, I had no trouble following what was going on even with my hearing problems. I am however going to read the book again before the next movie comes out at the latest and if I can get my hands on a copy I will re-read it and then go see it again on the big screen.
IMO this is a must see on the big screen and you don't want to miss it.
Another thing is the casting is brilliant, I don't think there is anyway it could be better.
Visually it is stunning and beautiful, just loved it and I thought they did a great job with following the book.

I read one review which pointed out that - unlike the Lynch movie - this one did away with internal dialogue. In the book, this is particularly iimportant for the Lady Jessica character, who must hide her reactions. But the reviewer also pointed out that not only is a voiceover very hard to do without seeming cheesy, but the different medium of film allows actors to express these reactions without words, in ways that the other characters don't get to see. And the actress playing Jessica did this superbly. |

Once I finish the book, I am going to go see the movie again and then I want to start a new thread with the spoiler label so we can discuss some specifics. Also my friend is going to borrow the book and re-read it also. In that thread, I will go into some specifics about places I think the movie could have added a bit here or there, although that would have lengthened the movie to a full 3 hours. Also couple of spots, that I think the movie improved on the book. |

I didn't like Lynch's vision of Dune. It was a cliff notes version that was just weird, but not really weird in a good way. I always thought that the novel deserved better. This is that version. I was blown away! It focused on political intrigue, world building, and introducing the characters. Visually, technology is finally at that level to bring something like this to life. The acting was really good, I liked who I was supposed to like and hated those I was supposed to hate. I've never read the books, and barely remembered the other versions so this one had me in the palm of its hand and I was enchanted by it.
I appreciated the slower pace, it gave me time to understand what is going on, and there is a lot going on. I also agree that the dialog was often lost on me; I couldn't hear it most of the time and would like to watch it again with CC.

To me the pace was not slow and now that I am up to 600+ pages of the book in my first re-read in over 50 years I realize how much they had to leave out, and while there are somethings they had to leave out to avoid a 4 hour movie, I don't think they have left out anything crucial. I am going to watch it again and then after that I too would like to watch it with CC. They did combine two scenes that are over 100 pages apart in the book into one scene and left out quite a bit of ceremony (45 minutes right there) I think that was the right decision. After I see this the second time, I plan to start a spoiler thread to discuss specifics about decisions that were made and what I think of those decisions. Oh and if I did not say this before, I never say Lynch's version. |

Well, I read the book(s) and I've watched all the Movie adaptations. I still haven't seen the new Movie but I'm looking forward to it! I actually kind of like the Lynch version because I saw it with some friends and they made silly comments throughout. Just good memories. As an actual adaptation, WTH! I saw the Lunch version at the theater with my Uncle David. Nostalgia is the driving force behind my enjoyment of his version. As an adaptation it definitely missed the mark. |

It felt like it was trying so hard to impress me, it forgot to make the characters seem alive.
I don't recall Piter saying his mantra, or being mentioned by name... And Dr. Yueh got like two lines (although I did like the actor).

I did not see the original three Star Wars movies until 1999. I do recommend the Green Knight, it does blend parts of some other stories into it. I read somethings the director wrote about choices he made and that actually make a few things make more sense and even after the fact helped me to enjoy the movie even more. It does help if you have read the original story, even a few different versions of the story. |

Yeah, there are IMO about 15 minutes that could have been added to the movie mostly dialogue that I think would have made it even better. I loved it, but the way my mind works is that it fills in bits from the book as I watch the movie. Even with an over 50 year gap between when I read the book and watching the movie. I have re-read the book and intend to try to watch the movie again before Thanksgiving. |
