The trip back to Patagonia took almost a month with the ship staying at Elati for a full 10 days while everyone recovered and some repairs were made. Blackjack refused to rush things, although both Sam and Sir Baltus kept insisting that the ship get to Patagonia ASAP. Sam because she had to report to Romanian Naval Intelligence and Sir Baltus because he had to report to his corporate overlords. Strangely, the Bad Penny was too busy, for a change, to do much as he spent much of his time working on some project, both on the computer and with the 3d printer in Engineering. Cyril, it turns out, is a fair hand as a medic and assisted Dr. Vargas in Sickbay treating the wounded. It looks like both Madame Cho and Gilroy are going to pull through. The new members of the crew all had to make a decision about staying, or joining the crew permanently. OOC: Guys, let me know if you PC is staying in the game and with the crew, or if you're making a new PC(s) for the game. I really DO want everyone to chime in with a reply to this post so we can gauge who is still with us.Eventually, Clear Sails lifted for Patagonia. The trip there was smooth and so was the reentry to normal space. Samantha made her call to RNI and Sir Baltus made his to Delgado. Before Clear Sails even reached high orbit she was met by several System Defense Boats who escorted her to a landing aboard Patagonia Navy Base where a guard was posted around the ship. All of you were politely, but firmly, escorted to housing where you would stay for a few days. The passengers, the folks from Delgado, were disembarked and disappeared from you. The still recovering Madame Cho and Gilroy were taken to the base hospital. You were allowed to moving around the Base, but weren't allowed to leave it..."For now" you were told. Then there was a debriefing, followed by another, and then there was a wait.... A few days later a Commander appeared at the ship and collected you all for "a meeting" and although it wasn't put as an order, it was clear that it could become one if you didn't take his invitation. All of the crew were escorted a few hundred meters from where your ship was docked to the third deck of an administration building and into a large conference room. Already seated at the large oval table were Sam, now in the uniform of a Lt. Commander with RNI tags on the shoulders, and Sir Baltus in a formal Delgado Trading uniform. As usual, Peng was dragging his feet and was still in the corridor when a party came down the corridor. Silva stops in the corridor and turns to the man who spoke to him. Captain de Graff's escort leaves him here at the doorway and disappears back the way they came. Pausing at the doorway, the pair see a man in civilian clothing, but wearing them like a uniform, come striding around the corner and toward them. Adam recognizes the man and holds out his hand to shake. "If Otto is involved in this..." he thinks. OOC: Just what Adam thinks is up to you.
--- Inside the conference room Sam has invited everyone to take a chair and continues, "Captain Howard will be joining us shortly, and we're still waiting for a couple more. Um, where's Mr. Silva?" she scans the group and notices the trio standing just outside the room. At this moment a door opens at the back of the conference room. This door was indistinguishable from the wall just a moment ago and it opening draws everyone in the room's attention. A tall thin man wearing a Captain's uniform with RNI tabs on the shoulders strides through followed by another man, a Lt. of the same branch, carrying a briefcase. Sam stands as this pair enter the room and the Captain strides to an empty chair at the table next to where Sam was seated. "Good morning." he says smiling, "I am Captain James Howard. Lt. Commander Clower, is everyone here?"Peng, Adam and Otto hear this from the doorway.

Charlie will take his seat and see what is going to happen to them.

Adam recognizes the man and holds out his hand to shake.
"If Otto is involved in this we are going to have some fun and kick some butt." he thinks. Otto takes the hand and giving it a firm shake, "Morning Captain!" Adam replies, "Colonel!" Then, "looks like we'd better get to the meeting, we'll catch up later." and they proceed to take a seat.

Takheal and Tokheletoi stood their watches and helped as they could during the journey. The Aslan, well, couple wasn't exactly the word, as they were unfailingly polite and professional with each other and with everyone else, spent time getting to know the other sophonts aboard.
Thy told of their lives on their homeworld, and how they decided to leave and go exploring, to see what lay beyond their star nation's borders. Takheal's name was actually a nickname, and it meant "Long Rifle" in his native tongue. He did provide his real name, but it was wholly unpronounceable to anyone without an Aslan vocal apparatus. His clan, Star Walker (that being a rough translation), was a vassal of Tokeletoi's Crooked River Clan. Ergo, he'd been assigned as her protector, and they weren't involved beyond that, even though they shared a cabin.

Ekhunoz sat near the center of the humans off to the side of the room watching the interchange, hes never seen so many appearing so jovial at one time. He understood he was going to be part of the boarding team, which is what he wanted to to start with. He always liked to do hand work, not do big bleep bloop intercepts.
His further understanding of their language was coming to him, now if he could understand the complex social interaction.

Once everyone is seated, Captain Howard looks around and begins.
"The Navy and Delgado agrees that the ship called Clear Sails is much too hot to head back into the Mantan Subsector at this time. Mr. Miller, I believe many of you know him as Blackjack Miller, has informed me that he has transferred ownership of that ship to its current crew. As such, we...Delgado and the Romanian Navy...have a proposal for you."
"Delgado has agreed to buy Clear Sails from you, or actually make an exchange, for another ship which RNI is providing them. You, and a few others, would be the free and clear owners of this ship. The condition for this exchange is your agreement to complete your previous deal with Delgado Trading and deliver their employees and modular habitats to each of the worlds previously agreed upon." he looks around to see how you are all looking, "During this operation you will have a secondary mission. That is to sniff out the network of pirates and slavers that has been operating in that subsector and those just inside Romanian territory. Their main bases, headquarters, are in Mantan, we believe, so striking them inside our territory would not stop them for long. We need to take the fight to their home territory.
The Navy doesn't expect that you will be able to eradicate the entire network, but you can gather information for the RNI. Frankly, the ship we're offering you in exchange has very sharp teeth, so you should not only be able to defend yourselves, but put a real dent in the Network's operations."
"This is the ship we are offering in exchange for Clear Sails, if you agree to undertake the mission." Howard presses a button and pictures of a ship with stats and deckplan appears on the wall behind him.
"This ship is currently named The Nine Bells. She is a 400 dton ship of the Neshemani class. She is outfitted as a gunned transport and has seen service as a Corsair as well as a Q-ship. It is as a Q-ship that she would be used in this mission. As you can see, she has four turrets, triple Pulse Lasers port and starboard amidships and dorsal and ventral turrets. The dorsal, or upper, turret as twin Plasma Cannon mounted for up close action prior to boarding or in support of ground operations. The ventral turret has twin missile launchers for ship to ship missiles or sand canister launch. All four turrets are of the 'pop-up' type, hidden when not in use. Oh, and don't let the picture of the side turrets fool you, in use, they offer full coverage from fore to side to aft when the turret pops up. She is has J2/M3 drives and a Model-3 computer aboard along with military grade sensors. She is equipped with movable panels to change her outward appearance and four separate transponder codes so she can disguise herself both physically and electronically. Oh, and she sports an armored hull, as well, for increased defense."
"Although she doesn't look it from the outside, she outclasses most naval vessels of her tonnage and should be able to chew up any pirate craft that try to attack you. That's the point! Your mission, in part, is to make yourselves a target for pirates, neutralize and board them to gather information. Finding bases, neutralizing them, and reporting back information you've gathered. The Delgado part is the cover for the mission, for our side, of course. Delgado is still very interested in you planting those Brokers and their equipment on the worlds between the border and the Mantan system, though."
"We are providing a party of experts for boarding and ground actions." Captain Howard nods toward men, most of you haven't met before."
Howard pauses to let you look at the ship, but if you start to ask questions will raise his hand and say, "Hold those questions for a bit, if you please." "If you are not interested in this proposal, you are free to leave now, with the understanding that what you have been told up to this point remains confidential." Howard stops and Sir Baltus picks up, "We will be withdrawing our charter with Clear Sails in that case, as we don't think you would be able to complete the project as we previously agreed."
Howard says, "I'll give you a bit to decide, let's say 30 minutes. Then we will return and if you are still here, that will be your agreement to the proposal and we will continue with the briefing."
Sir Baltus says looking around at the current crew of Clear Sails, "I hope you do it. Having been with you a while I think you could handle this project."
With that the Captain, his aide, Sam (or Lt Commander Clower as she was introduced just now), and Sir Baltus stand and exit the room through the rear door.
You are left alone in the room seated around the table with pictures of The Nine Bells on the wall to talk and decide...
OOC: Some of you sort of thought something like this was coming, but for others it's a real surprise. The two groups, current crew and boarding party members need to introduce yourselves and you need to decide if you are accepting this proposal or walking away. The game can continue either way.

He leaned back in his chair and considered the old crew and the prospective new members. " Honestly, I saw this coming and it doesn't surprise me. I like the idea. With Blackjack gone, we're all owners aboard now, but Clear Sails is a hot property. It wouldn't be long before someone caught up with us.
" I don't get any extra votes as Clear Sails' captain--which for those of you who don't know us, I've been doing the job since we picked up the agent and headed here with Blackjack's blessing--but I'll cast my voice in favor of this new plan." He smiled a little sheepishly. " I suppose I should introduce myself. I'm Charlie Lin, a merchant officer and our current captain, though I suppose that's up for discussion as well. I'm an excellent navigator. Only one space combat to my credit, but we won that fight." He'll let the other crewmembers have their say and just listen for the moment.

The Aslan listen to the others talk over the proposal. Tokheletoi makes a brief comment in their language, to which Takheal responds to with a nod and a low rumble from his chest. Those familiar with them recognize it as the human equivalent of a chuckle.

Thinking: Captain Sir Adam de Graff holds back for a moment to give the crew of the Clear Sails a chance to speak first, to see if some or all of them are up for the ongoing mission. While he does this he takes the measure of the little group before him.
Bad Penny he already knows, one to keep an eye on, lazy and of perhaps of dubious honesty, but a good gunner and aggressive as they all are.
The two Aslan, a contradictory people in human terms, but with a deeply held code of honor bound up in somewhat rigid gender roles, a ritualized social organization and when they commit to a commander, they are intensely loyal and honorable, good folks to watch your back. He notes that they also are just listening.
The Vargr. prideful and easily insulted, touchy and impulsive. They respect strength and value their freedom, but will follow a strong, decisive leader. This one, he feels will speak up before long.
Charlie who spoke up first, acting captain, officer and crack navigator I've no doubt.
The others from the Clear Sails, who have yet to reveal themselves.
Then, of course, my old friend Colonel Otto Heinrich Wolfgang Berger, a huge powerful man, oddly tall for a heavy world-er and versatile in a fight. A man to be trusted.
The other former military unknown to me, but obviously known to Colonel Berger, so another man that can also be trusted. He also is just listening right now.
A few others, that like myself are newcomers to this group.
If the other Clear Sails people do not speak, then I will, but I will give them all a chance to declare themselves first.

Doctor Vargas stands and says, "I think I'm going to decline this offer. It has been a pleasure to serve with all of you, and wish you the best of luck if you do decide to take the Navy up on this."
"For my part though, I think it is best if I move on." with nods to his, now former, crewmates the doctor leaves the room.

It has been a pleasure to serve with all of you, and wish you the best of luck if you do decide to take the Navy up on this.""For my part though, I think it is best if I move on." with nods to his, now former, crewmates the doctor leaves the room. “I don’t suppose any of us is a doctor or at least has a medic’s skill?” Captain de Graff glances around the room to see if a medic steps forward. Really a mission like this should have at least two medic's and a Doctor possibly one with surgical skills and experience with trauma medicine. Out of the corner of his eye he sees, Colonel Berger checking the room out as well. Colonel Berger muses to himself, that if no one has the medical skill needed we we will have to request a couple be provided.

Ted Bronson, a graying, lean, lanky man of 1.73 meters, speaks, "I'm Ted Bronson, new to the team, I signed on at Elati, I primarily handle Mechanical Systems, but I do have Medic-1 which is not much, but a start. I have a smattering of quite a few things, so I can assist a primary person with several things as needed. I was Scout for 9 terms and learned to make repairs whether I had all the parts I needed or not," he pauses and looks around, " otherwise I wouldn't be alive."

“Ted is a handy fellow,” Charlie agreed.

Things breaking down during an operation is how people get killed."

“Ted is a handy fellow,” Charlie agreed. " <chuckle>, Poser, that makes two of use, I'm Herman, "Jack", is fine. I know most of the old war horses here.
As usual, I'm here to help, DC, engineering, Guns, customizing vacc suits, playing with missiles. I'm a skinny almost worn out old man but I can help out where the Nine needs me."
Shift in his chair. "Need me to run a team, i'm ok, or give me a apprentice, we can fix or do anything on a ship."
Shifts in his chair again. "Anyway, I'm done. Let the kids talk."

Captain de Graff and Colonel Berger trade glances, both with the same thought, "Jack and Ted are skilled, experienced and out of the box thinkers, that bodes well for the repair and maintenance side of things."

Cyril has been exercising a steward's ability to be unnoticed.
"I've been working with Doc Vargas, and he's trained me to about Medic-2. For those who don't know me, I'm a steward, and most of what I did on Clear Sails involved cooking and scrubbing. Electricity was illegal back home, so I'm good in the galley and sickbay. Outside there I have to do some quick learning about equipment and situations where everything I know is theory. I can do Medic-2, but this is fair warning."

Food and the quality of the food are a major part of morale. If he has trained up as a Medic that is just a bonus."

Tokheletoi speaks up. "I am an able trader, and I know about dealing with people. I am also willing to learn about medicine."
"I can pilot and man a turret," Takheal says.

OOC: Captain de Graff has always liked the Aslan, they make good teammates. We should probably all spend some time learning up to at least medic one in our transit times between systems. Don't know why I never did that before, though anyone who has seen combat has picked up practical informal knowledge, but getting some real training to go with that is a great idea.
