From hengest 's tree thread here for mao to riff on [pasted in by hengest at mao's request] World TreeEach plane where beings dwell is flat and not very deep. For most purposes, the ground is solid enough, but dropping very large objects can cause a visible local ripple. The general location of the edges of one's plane is known to all intelligent beings by the end of their basic socialization period (the ability to have a reciprocal conversation), even if they have never travelled anywhere near those edges. Looking up during the daytime does reveal the "bottom" of the next plane floating high, high above. Planes alternate directions of spin, so one can observe the large features on the distant plane slowly changing: the basin of a sea, the underside of a mountain range. Due to some unknown feature of the world, looking up at night shows only a "sky" full of stars. The brightest of these stars has an apparent magnitude of -2.3, significantly brighter than Sirius, the brightest star in our night sky. There are, however, no "wandering stars" (planets) to be seen. Light during the day comes from an undefinable source, always in the same direction. Only the intensity changes throughout the day, not the direction. Strange as it seems, it is possible to crouch down and peer over the edge. Peering down off the edge, to which you have never been, shows the surface of the plane below, turning in the same direction as the plane above. The air here has a peculiar quality. You feel a touch of resistable pressure coming at you from outside the edge.

The trees' roots extend to other palanes holding them captive. One large one has the misfortune of being stuck in it's shadow. There evil dwells.

You feel a touch of resistible pressure coming at you from outside the edge.
Does this mean you can't fall off? Do you climb up and down the tree to travel from plane to plane? How about climbing down the roots to go to the lowest plane? Is the trunk hollow with stairs inside?

The Tree Unknown to the roots, the Tree's roots extend to all the foliage in the world. It exists on a slightly different dimensions and is unseen. The ancient druid who tends it, fell ill and almost died from it. It came from an unknown source and lasted nearly 2 years. The Tree went untended for that time. The adventurers are summoned by the druid to find out what happened to the Tree , as it is ailing . When the group arrives they are shone the incredible site and some of it is turning black. The satyrs that help the druid say there are weird looking pods in the lower branches that re being crushed by the black growth. There you have it , a very unusual dungeon! hengest

The Tree 2 This Tree is the avatar of the Sun, and as it's mortal form is endangered..... The Tree is tended to by 3 rangers. These rangers have gotten you a cry for help. They say the Tree is threatened by a huge group of Giants,Ogre's, Orcs Gnolls..(you get the idea) Lead by the greatest liche. They ask you to race to the Noble Templars(only these are good guys) and summon them to smash the army coming for the Tree.. The race to the Templars is eventfull but you get there in record time. The Templar sub commander you found is willing to help, as they have pledged, but need a few days to assemble. He tells you that the most likely path the army will take has several choke points. That they could be delayed at, A heavy forest, A mountain pass and a river they must cross. He needs all his Templars to send messages so they can assemble as quickly possible. He assures you that they will have allys and can easily deal with the threat IF they have the time.... hengest

The Tree in Spring,#4
The Tree is in an easily gotten to Micro dimension adjacent to a great city of good. Portals are all across the city. It is a huge attraction, with beings from across the continent coming to see it. One by one , the portals are closing. The mayor does not want to lose his cash cow and pleads to the group to see whats wrong. The city guard are preventing the peeps from getting in, in the fear that they will imprison visitors. As the group enters there is a mild frost being dissipated in the diffused sunlight. Shapes start moving across the sun and causing alarm. They find a very alien being, part humanoid, part bumble bee part Male African lion. the beings look confused. they see more. They are gathering by the gateways to exit, but not going through, There are more and more of them climbing down the Tree, none of them taking notice of the group as they begin to build strange hive-like structures. They are obviously the problem. How do you win a victory against an invading presence that you cannot touch, and don't know they are invading?
