Hobgoblins are large goblinkin that are smarter, bigger and stronger. Hob means small so calling these large creatures hobgoblins is a joke, since it enrages them to be called such. They are larger and more dangerous than orcs and other goblinkin. Hobgoblins like goblins, kobolds, orcs and gnolls will die in full sunlight or from a "Continual Light" spell in a intense fast burning fire. "Hobgoblin" literally means "small goblin" and thus using it as a name for "big goblins" is quite funny.

Hobgoblins – Everything you can say about goblins and kobolds applies to hobgoblins except they are about the same intelligence as humans and are like orcs in being warlike, cruel and bloodthirsty and savage. Hobgoblins average about 7 feet in height and are fearless. They are favored by other races as elite troops, whereas orcs are viewed as cannon fodder to use a more modern term.

Although hobgoblins should really be smaller than normal goblins the idea of the "super-soldier goblin" is so entrenched in RPGs that I treat them as such, too. They are my favourite "enemy elite" if I need a large force of Chaos to threaten the Realm. Of course, at other times they are popular mercenaries, too.

One could always make hobgoblins smaller and add a "uber goblin" if we wanted to or something completely different. It looks as though that is what Crimhthan The Great did.
