". . . We each should have something to boil water in." Sora nods but comments: "Or purchase a skin of strong, cheap wine or vinegar, then mix a portion into whatever water we drink."Kavita shudders and whimpers as the orc speaks. Sora catches Kavita's eye, then says: "I see you share my opinion of our new 'comrades.'"Sora doesn't care if the orcs overhear him.

Sora nods but comments: "Or purchase a skin of strong, cheap wine or vinegar, then mix a portion into whatever water we drink." The only non-magical way you know of to sanitize water is to boil it. Vinegar has very limited effectiveness in any drinkable concentration and watering wine is likewise limited in its effectiveness, they are better than nothing but only good for some bacteria and ineffective against viruses, some bacteria, and all parasites. You do not have access to bleach or iodine tablets as they remain undiscovered so far.Sora catches Kavita's eye, then says: "I see you share my opinion of our new 'comrades."Sora doesn't care if the orcs overhear him. Sora attempts to catch Kavita's eye, but finds it impossible to do so, she seems unaware of him. Arax snorts with a short laugh and replies, "You are perhaps the one everyone should watch, since you look like the devil the human religions fear. Have you not seen how the towns people look at you and make the human's sign against evil when you pass?"

Kavita whispers. "Torchlights may be made from brush. Ropes will be needed. And a sturdy shovel. Most of all,"… she unfolds her arms from the table to reveal three 3-sided dice, each with its black face on top, "we shall want for disease-free water. There is illness coming." (Her face is tear-streaked and Shiyazthar leans close to her, touching foreheads.) As everyone stares they each realize trying to look directly at the dice makes their eyes hurt and their eyes continually are trying to look anywhere else. It looks very strange and warped and their eyes blur.Arax looks at each of his brothers and then they nod and he speaks, " We have heard of elven seers from old stories, but had never seen one. This explains her appearance so odd for an elf. It is a possible event she is seeing. We will need to pay extra attention to where we drink from, since you can't carry that much water with you. We each should have something to boil water in." Kavita shudders and whimpers as the orc speaks. Arax says, "We mean you no harm elfling, whatever troubles you, we mean no harm. Among our people seers are held in high regard and we hold you with that same regard. Our strong right arms will protect and defend you!"
That's DEFINITELY worth an exalt, Sir PD! Kavita continues to surprise me!

Arax snorts with a short laugh and replies, "You are perhaps the one everyone should watch, since you look like the devil the human religions fear. Have you not seen how the towns people look at you and make the human's sign against evil when you pass?"Sora lays his hand casually on the pommel of his sword and turns to face the three orcs, as Josiah smoothly moves to guard his flank, likewise moving his hand to his sword pommel. Looking the three bravos up and down with a cool expression, Sora rumbles, "Surely you've heard the expression, 'Better the devil you know than the one you don't?' Just so we're clear . . ."Hooking the thumb of his off-hand toward his chest, Sora continues, ". . . I'm the known devil . . ."Pointing at the impudent orcish bravos, he finishes, ". . . and you three are unknown devils. I and my companion agree to tolerate you only because our new friends do. That toleration ends the moment you prove non-Lawful. At which point, you die." ************************************************************************************************************ [OOC]. . . I assume Sora's knowledge comes from folk wisdom, rather than from scientific experimentation. Watered wine was a thing because everyone knew it was better than drinking plain water. The historical recipes for boiling water prescribe things like dipping copper or precious metals into it prior to putting it on the fire, so the purification mechanism clearly wasn't understood. If you could ask an actual person who lived back then, they'd be unlikely to tell you accurately which worked better.

Even on Real-Earth, consensus neither was nor is common. I foresee fun errors and arguments among party members at Just the Wrong time. Unexpect the expected!

Arax (and his brothers) laughs long and loud, "For someone that claims to be the paragon of Law you sound more like a blowhard of Chaos. At least we know up front that you cannot be trusted, and we will watch our backs." They remain relaxed and have NOT grabbed for their weapons.

Addressing the rest of the party, Arax continues, "As people who have been out on the guarding caravans for the last year and a half, I can tell you that behavior like that," points at Sora & Josiah , "Is a good way to get yourself killed, picking fights when you don't need to."

At least I think Kavita thinks so. I may never know what goes on in her head.

The entire party arrives at the set time to meet Graytusk and find Tuck is already there and looking quite pleased with himself.
The ogre (and Tuck) are at a large table with food and drink at each seat according to the drink and type of food each of you previously ordered. Graytusk greets you all saying, "Welcome my young friends, I am so pleased that we could do business together come sit, drink and eat I have much to tell you."
"Firstly, I have three pack mules with food, some extra gear, and extra flasks of water from my pitcher ready to be loaded on said mules so that you can get underway shortly." He looks around at each of you with a large grin, "I also have a few details about approach and entry to the ruins and some cautions to give you. Assuming that the trip is successful perhaps we can do more business in the future."
"Thirdly, those extra flasks of water - treat them like they are more precious than gold and save them for need."

Tuck speaks up, "Come on in and have a seat, Graytusk has been very gracious." Tuck glances down to the left briefly. "That water has some great properties that should prove very beneficial."

As you all file in you take note of how friendly Herv and the orcs have become. Those sitting near Tuck take note of a couple of old and large leather bags lying at his feet.

Planchet I will wait until this evening and then I will proceed. [OOC: Finally sorted out Sora's and Josiah's meager possessions. In doing so, I made some guesses as to quality and price, particularly for cheaper versions of standard mount gear. I must say, this is the first time I can remember not being able afford daggers as backup weapons for my characters.]

Sora and Josiah enter and take seats as far from Herv and his new friends as possible. In contrast to his earlier fulsome manner of speech, Sora says nothing but the minimum pleasantries necessary to avoid giving offense to his host and those seated nearest him. Josiah - as is apparently his custom - says nothing at all, merely nodding in agreement with Sora.

Shiy and Kavita arrive at two minutes past the appointed hour. ("Women," mutters he. "Human, elf - makes no difference.") Backpacks full, Kavita's with some extra sticks strapped onto it. "I may have traveled that area," says he to the Tusk of Grey. "Has the forest survived?"

Graytusk looks around the room and says, "We will wait just a bit for the stragglers to get here and then I will begin, those who aren't here will need to catch up from the rest of you along the way." He picks up a roll of parchment and lays it across the table in front of him, but does not unroll it yet.
Herv is seated to the left of Graytusk, then the orcs, then Shiy and Kavita. Tuck is seated to the right of Graytusk, then a couple of seats, then Sora and Josiah, then more seats and around to Kavita.
