Hello, I'm working out my own home brew that will be a d6 type of sword and sorcery type of game, but I wanted to design so you could play it solo as well as with a group. For this purpose, I wanted combat rounds to be resolved in 1 roll. 1 roll would tell which side or both does damage to the other essentially. Since you would not be individually rolling for playing or monsters in a combat in each round, I thought the only way to do this was maybe to make each side have an overall combat score which will affect the odds in combat, and then a certain number of special powers or other moves could be used outside of an attack such as spell casting, retreating, etc. Then I thought, is this starting to sound a little bit too much like a war game? Do I just need to modify Chainmail rules and make each side like a military unit? Anyways, any thoughts would help if you have any. While you can try to make it really simple, sometimes you can, IMO, make it too simple. Yes, exactly! It would work well with 1 PC vs a group, but I have been banging my head trying to figure out what to do when there is more than 1 PC. I have been leaning towards another idea, I found in Pits & Perils. The idea is a combined attack and damage roll. That is - how well you roll to hit will determine your damage. This would mean that each PC would make such as roll, and each of the enemies would too. I could even do it this way and have a really failed hit causing damage to the attacker or allies - aka a critical miss. The problem with the original unit idea I had is you could divide up a damage amount, but then you would need to arbitrarily distribute it amongst your PCs. All good and fine, but it may begin to feel more board gamish than RPG if I went that direction. I'll have to give this a little more thought though. There is also order of events in combat I haven't worked out yet... For solo play, I think this aspect would need to be really spelled out.

It would work well with 1 PC vs a group, but I have been banging my head trying to figure out what to do when there is more than 1 PC. I have been leaning towards another idea, I found in Pits & Perils. The idea is a combined attack and damage roll. That is - how well you roll to hit will determine your damage. I could even do it this way and have a really failed hit causing damage to the attacker or allies - aka a critical miss. Sorry I haven't updated recently. I am finally getting back to it after a brief break. I have hammered out a d6 skill system where characters with a skill can add +1 (apprentice) or +2 (adept) to their dice roll with a base target of 5 or higher to succeed. When characters have no training in a skill, they will add +0 (amateur) to their roll. This is basically where I am at.
Illustrations will come from public domain comic books, unless I figure out how to be more ambitious - but they will suit this project well for now.
I am polishing the character creation section, and the characters will be largely determined by their ancestries (Anurans - Toadlings, Automatons, Epahan - native/human-like rulers, Great Brains - post humans, Grotto Kin - subterranean dwellers / humanist, Mantics - mutants / post-human, Reptosaurs - reptilian, Tellurian - off-worlders/human-like, Xagzan - warp Lords /humanish). The ancestries will help determine their age, health, skills, flaws, origins, coins, starting equipment, and hirelings. A great deal of character customization will be possible within each ancestry based character.
Characters will not have any stats - only their ancestry, skills, and flaws. It is part of a thought project of mine I am experimenting with!
I have drawn a map of the world as well tracing a spacecraft photo of Mars' smaller moon Deimos and imagined oceans and forests and mountains where the topography is mottled with craters. It was quite an interesting project!
I am still trying to get the combat sequence up to speed, but the next section will be polishing the description of skills (including immaterialisms - psychic power, invocations and sorcery, transmogrifications - mutations) before tackling combat, and the turn by turn game mechanics.
The game premise is that the Xagzan have come to the planet Epaphus through warp gates to send all of the natural resources back to their dying planet. Through the process Epaphus is gradually being destroyed. Epaphus is surrounded by a cosmos that adventurers cannot leave while the Xagzan has control of the planet. Your band of adventurers must go on a series of adventures to save Epaphus from destruction.
I'll see about getting a picture or two up here from time to time to share my progress.
I really appreciate the interest, as it is the first game I've tried to write!
Fortunately, with all the news swirling around, it will be a unique system without relying on OGL.

Well, I've done an aggressive clean up and edit of the ancestry backgrounds. Each now will start with 3 skills, and 2 flaws. I now need to clean up the next manuscript sections on skills and flaws. (The game is half written, but much of it was originally written as an OSR before I had some sort of inspiration to shoot myself in the foot and do a whole lot of extra work and rewrite it as a distinctive rule-set! I was actually thinking the other day that I could make the game a unique d8 game instead of a d6 game - but that would be biting off much more than I can chew at the moment!)

I am trying to work in a background working up to discovering a portal or gate to Epaphus. The author will be a retired officer after the Franco-Prussian war who in grief wishes to travel and through various circumstances and inspiration from the Exposition Internationale in Paris, 1889, sets upon an expedition to find the elusive Sasq’ets in unchartered woods in the forests of Vancouver Island in the Dominion of Canada. I already wrote the discovery of the gate, so I now I have a large piece of the story to go back and write. My main purpose is to give the narrator a background, and build up a lot of tension in the discovery of the mean to travel to Epaphus! The appendix of this project will contain my RPG when I eventually get to it.

Or, I might set it up as one of those annoying conventions in art history books, where the footnotes or end notes are longer than the text itself - in this case one of these "footnotes" or "end notes" - will be my entire role-playing game! But anyways, here is another excerpt you might like: ------------------------------------------ "Before I discovered this gate or portal, if you will, I had been trying to become a writer in Paris before being conscripted in the Franco-Prussian war of the early 1870s. In this inimical battle, a great limb of France was torn off its body: Alsace-Lorraine – the lands where I was born. It was there my heart broke and I entered the deepest melancholies. Most of my close family passed in the war, save my dear wife, Hélène, who passed nearly a decade earlier of scarlet fever. She had left me no children. My sadness was aggravated all the more by the many thousands that had died, and that the once great France was no longer unconquerable in the eyes of Europe, and the entire world. I was able to return to Paris despite France’s defeat, and work at a newspaper from time to time. But, mostly I would brood alone in my apartment, or with a book at a café living off a comfortable pension I had acquired for my army service.
I carried on with this dark routine of solitude uncaring about the modern tribulations of societal public disorder or chronic daily agitation about French politics. That is, until, a rather distinguished bearded gentleman in a top hat and a very refined suit seated himself across from me in the café one day. He came from a well-to-do family, and had been schooled at America’s first and foremost Harvard University. I was pleasantly surprised at this fact, for I too had been educated at France’s first and best, L'université de Paris!
And, so we had become close friends after our brief acquaintance, and met the next three days when I, at long last, learned of his purpose in France. He looked at me with enthusiastic eyes, and told me that my time of sadness was about to pass. I inquired what he was referring to, and he continued.
“Alexandre,” Clint said with his usual directness without the overdone effeteness of many Frenchman. “For one who writes for a newspaper, it is extraordinary how little interest or time you make in actually reading one. Do you not realize? The greatest fair in the world is to be held in Paris this year – The World’s Fair!”
I should have remembered, but somehow did not that 1889 marked one-hundred years since the storming of the Bastille, and that the Exposition Universalle was to be held for the third time in Paris!
“My dear friend, Clint,” I said. “Then it seems, a time for the greatness of France has returned. If you traveled this far from your Americas to attend the Exposition, then allow me to give you the honor of my company at the fair.”

Upon his arrival, he shook hands with me at once, and with a surprising straightforwardness introduced himself in English as an American by the name of Clint Adams. He was an uncharacteristically animated man who provided the most unexpected and welcome distraction from my misery for I quickly found he and I had much in common. For starters, he was thirty years in age, and I had just turned thirty a few years back. Further, he had a decidedly engaging manner of sharing stories and jokes on a wide variety of subject matter from art, literature, to science, sport, medicine, and politics. He additionally was not someone who idly chattered, but rather someone who knew about many things. He came from a well-to-do family, and had been schooled at America’s first and foremost Harvard University. I was pleasantly surprised at this fact, for I too had been educated at France’s first and best, L'université de Paris! And, so we had become close friends after our brief acquaintance, and met the next three days when I, at long last, learned of his purpose in France. He looked at me with enthusiastic eyes, and told me that my time of sadness was about to pass. I inquired what he was referring to, and he continued. “Alexandre,” Clint said with his usual directness without the overdone effeteness of many Frenchman. “For one who writes for a newspaper, it is extraordinary how little interest or time you make in actually reading one. Do you not realize? The greatest fair in the world is to be held in Paris this year – The World’s Fair!” I should have remembered, but somehow did not that 1889 marked one-hundred years since the storming of the Bastille, and that the Exposition Universalle was to be held for the third time in Paris! “My dear friend, Clint,” I said. “Then it seems, a time for the greatness of France has returned. If you traveled this far from your Americas to attend the Exposition, then allow me to give you the honor of my company at the fair.” Wow, that is really good, I am surprised that you are not a published author with a whole slew of books.

Sorry for disappearing for a while. I was helping Basic Fantasy crew edit some of the books to put them into Creative Commons. And then I got sidetracked with writing a campaign book for Olde House Rules' new game Mydwandr. So, I haven't given up this project, and it will be my big thing for 2024!
