Some good posts on this old thread, and I'm sure on several others. I just skimmed through the linked thread. In doing so, I had a thought, regarding how so many sandbox games tend to start with a group of 1st [or even 0th] Level PCs, all of them young and from the same small medieval village. People like this would know very little about locations beyond their homeplace and most of that little would be inaccurate. When they venture forth into the wider world, it's thus easy to make that world up as the game unfolds. E.g. the Bottom Up approach. I have always assumed that this specific approach would only work in a medieval (or pseudo-medieval/post-apocalyptic) milieu. But a science fiction novel I'm currently listening to on Audible.com [The Lost Fleet, Book Four: Valiant] presented me with another possibility. The protagonists encounter a star system which had been abandoned ~75 years previously by the megacorp which had started to develop it, when said system was bypassed during the creation of a new FTL travel system. Officially, the system was completely uninhabited and therefore had not been visited by anyone after abandonment. But actually, the cheap megacorp had left behind all "non-essential" employees. These people - having spent three generations without any contact with the wider universe - are functionally equivalent to medieval villagers. Building the wider universe for PCs who are rescued from this isolation would be just as unlimited.

I started quite late, I think, I must have been in my early 20s. Although I am certain I would have loved TTRPGs as a child, I just never knew anyone who knew how to play. It really reminds me of how inaccessible the game seems when you have never seen or heard anyone play it. I ended up buying the Player's handbook one day, read through it all, and DMd for some friends. That book was hundreds of pages and not translated into Danish so that might have been a reason for the inaccessibility as well. Though the concept of mechanics of a game that has no board can also be quite hard to get. I clearly remember being exposed to the OSR one day though reading Into the Odd purely out of casual interest. It was such a weird experience. It was really as if I was back to not understanding how the game was played again. I was used to several hundreds of pages of rules, powers, feats, spells etc. and rules for every thing you could do in game in the form of stats and bonuses. And here was this booklet with 20 pages of rules, examples and advice pretending to be a complete game. I really had no idea how I would run such a game. That really sparked my interest. I had to find out how that was possible, and man am I glad I did! As you can imagine I was not missing any rules. The game was complete. I just had a completely different understanding of what a TTRPG was. Coming from an earlier ruleset and approach, I think many people could use the newer versions of D&D in quite the same manner as they are used to (not to say it would be ideal) but having learned the game from reading the newer editions, I can only say, it really feels like an entirely different game. FYI for all readers here is the link to Into The Odd over at DriveThruRPG. I really think that the different versions of D&D are entirely different games, although as long as the group is open to the referee/DM calling the shots and running the game to his taste, you really can play any version anyway. It is amazing though how few rules you need to run the game. When I referee, I rarely refer to the rules during the game beyond a few tables.

Howdy! Morton here of Morton, Morton and Morton aka me, myself and I. OD&D Judge, Jury and Executioner. I never kill players, but I do give them all the rope they need to hang themselves. As Judge I create the world, the Jury is the game world and the Executioner is bad decisions made in the Game World. Bad decisions are punished swiftly and usually in a permanent manner. Raise Dead and Reincarnation do exist and these sometimes give a player a second chance to learn wisdom.

They wouldn't take me, as my body is messed up. I've heard that Germany was not a bad place to be stationed.

While I am not opposed to TPKs having presided over a number myself, I do believe in asking that time honored question, "Are you sure you want to do that?"
