Welcome to Iucounu ! Come on in and sit a spell. How did you get into gaming and what is your favorite game? Thank you for the welcome The Perilous Dreamer . I am glad to be here! Having grown up in the era of WotC D&D it was an awakening some five years back when I was introduced to TSR D&D. A lot of frustrations about the game suddenly made sense and the whole thing has really consumed most of my time for the past years (glad it did). Now I run my game close to OD&D. (If only there were more players in my area interested in playing!) I am glad that I found out that this forum existed. One can never have too many sources of discussions and reflections to peruse and hopefully add to.

One can never have too many sources of discussions and reflections to peruse and hopefully add to. Welcome, Iucounu! Hope you find a lot of interest here (and contribute). I am very interested in hearing more details of your story of discovering ever-older versions of D&D, if you want to share those here or even start a thread. Likely others around here would be interested, too.

I started quite late, I think, I must have been in my early 20s. Although I am certain I would have loved TTRPGs as a child, I just never knew anyone who knew how to play. It really reminds me of how inaccessible the game seems when you have never seen or heard anyone play it. I ended up buying the Player's handbook one day, read through it all, and DMd for some friends. That book was hundreds of pages and not translated into Danish so that might have been a reason for the inaccessibility as well. Though the concept of mechanics of a game that has no board can also be quite hard to get. I clearly remember being exposed to the OSR one day though reading Into the Odd purely out of casual interest. It was such a weird experience. It was really as if I was back to not understanding how the game was played again. I was used to several hundreds of pages of rules, powers, feats, spells etc. and rules for every thing you could do in game in the form of stats and bonuses. And here was this booklet with 20 pages of rules, examples and advice pretending to be a complete game. I really had no idea how I would run such a game. That really sparked my interest. I had to find out how that was possible, and man am I glad I did! As you can imagine I was not missing any rules. The game was complete. I just had a completely different understanding of what a TTRPG was. Coming from an earlier ruleset and approach, I think many people could use the newer versions of D&D in quite the same manner as they are used to (not to say it would be ideal) but having learned the game from reading the newer editions, I can only say, it really feels like an entirely different game.
