Standard goblins are noted as being small monsters that see well in darkness or dim light, but in full daylight they subtract -1 from attack and morale dice. They also attack dwarves on sight and appear in groups of 40-400. As a variation on this you can run these as small humanoids that are very cunning and devious that make very dangerous opponents at night and in the underworld as they never check morale as long as they outnumber the opponent by a 2 to 1 margin ; however, in full daylight or when caught in a "Continual Light" spell they die a horrible death as they burst into flames. Anything they are in contact with that is combustible will also be ignited by this.

Goblins – These are the smallest of the evil humanoid monsters, not very bright, extremely dirty, completely untrustworthy with any third party, very loyal to each other but only with regard to outsiders so if you kill one you have picked a fight with all of them. Otherwise they happily stab each other in the back. They have a keen since of smell and excellent night vision and are excellent trackers. They always try to avoid full daylight, as they do not see well in daylight and it is painful for them. They are barely 3 feet tall. They are not complete cowards and like to have huge numerical advantages when the attack armed creatures. They like to prey on the weak or small groups. They are cave dwellers.

From the OD&D description: The added bold italics is an edit!
GOBLINS: These small monsters are as described in CHAINMAIL. They see well in darkness or dim light, but when they are subjected to full daylight they subtract -1 from their attack and morale dice. They attack dwarves on sight. Their hit dice must always equal at least one pip.
Composition of Force: When in their lair the "goblin king" will be found. He will fight as a Hobgoblin in all respects. He will be surrounded by a body of from 5 -30 (roll five six-sided dice) guards who will fight as Hobgoblins also.

As I'm sure you've gathered by now, I made them a playable race in lieu of Halflings, 'cause my game ain't from Middle-Earth.

If I may go completely off topic for a moment:
I have a fairly complete set of RuneQuest 3 products where every reference to 'duck' is Tippexed out and replaced with 'goblin'.
Just wanted to get that out there.
