When I got interested in the OSR (I know there is contention around the use and meaning of this term) back in 2013, I was very intrigued by the existence of the retro clones. Frankly, I still am. Not because I am so up on the tables or this or that detail or even the approaches. But simply the notion of making freely-available (or cheaply available) versions of these classic rulesets really appeals to me. Maybe even more so than it would appeal to me if the copyright holders just released the old books for free in PDF forever (although I support that).
There's something I dig about the flavor, about trying to bring that flavor, that savor, into the present time, instead of letting it moulder in these documents that seem to be from the past.
There's a sense of mystery -- I get it from the LBBs, AD&D 1E, and even B/X and BECMI. The LBBs are in a special category of their own, but I do get that sense of mystery. By the time of 2E, I lose it (nothing against anyone who plays 2E -- I'm just judging by the sourcebooks, saying what feeling I get from them). Everything I've seen from 3E on lacks that for me.

I dig the clones and I even bought the low-cost digest-sized books for Delving Deeper and White Box: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game. I think they're both pretty slick but Delving Deeper is my favorite.

Not to scan the tables, but I don't know, just for flavor.

I'm interested in the annotated version that's supposed to be coming sometime.

I am fond of Delving Deeper, I think it is the best OD&D 3LBBs clone. If you want to go to OD&D plus Greyhawk, then Iron Falcon is the best choice. I think these are the two best clones that accurately reproduce the games they emulate. Other clones add in house rules and d20 stuff.

I wish it was digest-sized, but it serves the same purpose at the end of the day.
