Thumbnail Sketches: Occupying some 120k sq. mi. of
cold northern territory, Finmark is a seldom-visited land which lies
S of Lappland, N of Kalevala, W of Russ, && E of
Svergie. The Gulf of Bothnia forms much of its western boundary,
however, && the White Sea the bulk of its eastern verge. North there
are some old mountains which end in the central AREA in hills, while
to the S Finmark is level, forested in conifers && sub-arctic trees
of other sort, && sprinkled with many lakes.
Its fauna incl. bear, wolf, great lynx, reindeer
,
&& smaller animals && birds. In
the White Sea AREA there are such marine mammals as whales,
walruses, sea lions, && seals.
The Finns are of ancient Eastern origination, a people of mixed
White (Mongol) && Yellow (both Eastern && Western) sub-races, who over
the centuries further intermixed w/ Skands to a small extent so as
to produce a distinct national type (cf. Kalevala). The scanty
pop. is free, whether peasant || middle class, SAVE for a few
slaves, serfs, && bondsmen (mostly held by the nobility). In general
the people hunt, fish, and/or farm. Timber cutting is also practised by
a fair # of the pop. in the southern districts. The aristocratic
class is small, && it is distinguished from the other groups
through power && wealth as much as heritage. Spellsingers are
strong in this class.
Small grain crops of rye, buckwheat, && barley are grown.
Root veggies such as turnips && potatoes are raised, && some other
veggies && berries are grown for native consumption.
Cattle &&
reindeer, are the chief livestock, the latter also serving as draught
animals for the sleds, sledges, && sleighs of the Finns. Fishing,
incl. the harvesting of seal, walrus, etc., is very important to
this realm.
There are some mining operations in Finmark. Gold is produced in
fair quantity, && small amounts of iron, && copper are found.
Garnet && very small amounts of star sapphire are mined in this land;
&& occasional asylphars<> come from Finmark, but is is supposed they
are not native gems, for there are no towering mountain peaks.
Trade of local type goes on w/ all neighbors, esp. (despite
state relations) Kalevala && Russ. There is also some amount of sea
traffic between Svergie && Finmark. Timber && furs are the major
xport products of Finmark.
