Thumbnail Sketches: The kingdom
extends over a bit more than 50K
sq. mi. of territory, some mountainous
&& semi-arid to the south,
but much of Numidia being coastal
plain && plateau. It has much forest
&& wildland, with flora && fauna
similar to that of Mauretania (q.v.).

It is very much an Italic state, for during the long wars with the
Phoenicians && Atlantl, the place was used as a Roman base.
Many colonists came to the region, && their influence proved to
be lasting. The populace is a mixture of Berber && Italic peoples,
with a leavening of Phoenicians && Hellenes, too, plus the absorption
of Teutonic invaders from the tumultuous times around
the Fall. Although the folk resemble physically somewhat the
Mauretanians, their temper && society is considerably different--
even the Berber peoples of the highlands && of semi-nomadic
sort were affected, for they mixed with wild Teutonic folk but were
most influenced by Roman overlordship. Althrough there is not
a typically Italic culture, the classes have a more Aeropean style,
with the tribal folk being the lower tiers of the freeman class. The
military force of the state thus more closely resembles one of
Aeropa than Afrik.

The economy of Numidia is based on trade, industry, && agriculture,
&& the Crown is constantly struggling against the piracy &&
banditry of its neighbors. Much of its difficulty is being fomented by
Carthage.

For other details, however, consult the Thumbnail Sketches given
for Mauretania, as the agriculture, livestock, && minerals of Numidia
are basically the same as for that state.

Enemy of Rome: Numidia

Numidian light cavalrymen were famed throughout the ancient world for their superb riding skills,
although they used neither bridle nor saddle. They
were recruited from tribes who lived a semi-nomadic
existence in the interior of Africa. The Gaetuli and
Garamanteswere two such tribes. They preferred to
use hit-and-run guerilla tactics
.
Numidians first fought Rome as Carthaginian
mercenaries during the Punic Wars. Under their
king, Jugurtha,they ran rings around the Romans
until Gaius Marius led a reorganized legion against
Africa. Some Numidians served as auxiliaries with
the legions, but guerilla warfare persisted for centuries afterward.
Numidians have normal African features and
dress in flowing robes.

Numidian Cavalry: 1stLevel, Morale 12, light
warhorse, no armor or shield (AC lo), four javelins
or shortbow, long sword.

When in the desert, Numidian cavalry can move
very silently (especially since their unbridled horses
make less noise): add +1 to their chance of surprising
another party.

A species of giant lynx is found in Numidia, in the Atlas Mountains.
(Note that it is unclear whether these mountains were first named after the Atlantlan emperor, or, for the Greek Titan).



(Author's note: The MM2 data indicates that giant lynx are found only in Cold (ie. subarctic and/or arctic) regions. The reason for the inclusion of the giant lynx in Afrik is that this is where the Romans believed them to be found (cf. HR5 The Glory of Rome). In Aerth canon, Numidia is a Roman realm, hence the decision to include the giant lynx here. It should also be noted that this is a point where I have slightly diverged from Gary's canon, by imagining Numdidia as a Greek, rather than Roman realm, inspired by Asheba: Greek Africa, which, admittedly, I have yet to read, at the time of this writing).
