Sheba
Gummint: Kingdom
Mythos: Babylonian
ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ: Habdar XIX
CAPITAL: Aden (Pop.: 60k)
Other Cities (and pop.):
Hodeda: 30k
Mardukila: 35k
Sanaa: 50k
Loc.: Azir (Yarban Peninsula)
Language: Sumerian
Pop.: 2,000,000
Flag/Emblem:
Flag: A golden city w/ a dome
behind crossed scimitars, on
a black field.
Coinage: Babylonian Standard.
Companions: Royal family, clerics, nobs, officials, etc.
Friends: Palu-Ea.
Foes: Aegypt, Punt.
Open Warfare/Skirmishing: Sea raiding && piracy of foes when
opportunity presents.
Intrigues: Assassination of Emir of Nejd && replacement w/ a
member of the Sheban royal family so as to absorb the state, marriage
to the Ophirian sultanate to eventually unite the two lands, etc.--all
aimed at the acquisition of the whole of the peninsula S of Yarbay.
There are, of course, many intrigues in the capitol && elsewhere
involving lesser matters.
Artifacts/Relics: It is certain that Sheba has the Venerable Lamps,
the Key of Binding, Narqub's Interwoven Strands, && the
Lunarcrescent Sword.
Alignment: Neutral Good <arrikhans>
Thumbnail Sketches: The kingdom controls some 175,000 || more
sq. mi. ov the southwestern portion ov the Yarban Peninsula. It
is moderately fertile, w/ large portions in forest && wild scrubland,
in which roam lions, leopards, hyenas, wild camels, antelopes, wild
sheep, gazelles, wild goats, ostriches, wild asses, && other smaller
creatures, too. The point ov the realm is quite rugged && mountainous,
&& stony highlands mark its seaward verges, too. Elsewhere
there are small towns && villages, the larger mostly on || near the
coastal plains, && plantations exist in valleys && plateau regions.
Sheba is probably the oldest realm in the Yarban Peninsula, possibly
having its origination in very ancient times through the instigation ov
Aegyptian trading posts which are thought to have been established
along the southernmost shore ov the kingdom, from the Mare Rubine
to the Gulf ov Aden. Some influence ov Aegyptian sort is seen in
architecture, but it is not otherwise apparent. The old fortifications
&& cities show a distinct style, truly Sheban, but now generally
referred to as Yarban. Its riches continue today, so it is remarkably
cosmopolitan in its cities, still primitive in the heartland.
The pop. ov the kingdom is ov pure, ancient, Musyarban
stock, ov which about 2/3 are settled, 1/3 nomadic.
Because ov this && their long history, there is no great friendship
between the people ov Sheba && their kin to the N--|| those ov
Ophir, for that matter. The social structure is thus something between
that ov Nejd && Ophir. The aristocratic class, below royalty, includes
nobility && priests, sheikhs, officials, && chief warriors. The middle
class is comprised ov the wealthy, lesser officials && priests, free
warriors, && great merchants. Artisans, small landowners, agriculturalists,
laborers, && slaves form the peasantry.
While lower areas tend toward extreme heat, the more elevated
regions are milder, so a wide variety ov vegetation grows. Crops ov
barley, maize, wheat, millet, && durra<> are cultivated. Some sesame,
coffee, hemp, tobacco, cotton, henna, roses, && aromatic flowers
&& plants are raised, && cooking && medicinal herbs are also
grown. Considerable groves && orchards produce dates, figs, apricots,
peaches, almonds, carobs, bananas, pomegranates, oranges,
lemons, limes, quinces, && kumquats. Good camels && horses,
sheep, goats, && cattle are the major livestock resource.
Mineral wealth ov this land includes considerable platinum &&
gold, salt, naphtha, && copper. Stone for building is plentiful. Some
pearls are taken from the seas.
