Have you used Philotomy's Musings and if so how much? I have read them several times, and used some of it in my campaign.

Philotomy had a lot of great commentary. Purely a shame that he took the site down.

I've used a number of the ideas at my table, like maximum damage on a critical hit. I also like the general ideas presented.
Several people have reposted the text from the site online, just search for Philotomy Jurament.

Yeah, a lot of good stuff and although he took the site down he has given some people permission to re post it and someone, also with permission, converted it into a pdf. Philotomy's OD&D Musings

You can download it as a pdf, too. It has a little table of contents and everything. Great commentary.

I answered No I haven't used it, though possibly I've been influenced by it. I did just skim through it. I could see using some ideas from it, and remember the posts as they came out and always looked forward to reading his next installment.

As I look through the PDF document I'm startled at how many of these ideas I seem to have come to in my own time - criticals for double damage and the emphasis on eliminating rolls, for instance. Great minds, and all that...

Some I do and some I don't. The biggest influence has probably been on my view of the Underworld, with a capital "U". Doors that hinder outsiders, creatures that appear only to assault adventurers, generally a more mythic and alien feeling for the whole hypogean setting.

Like some of you, I don't necessarily 'use' much of it in-game, per se... But it was probably the most important literary influence in my own personal desire to 'game before my time' and basically avail myself of years of AD&D style gaming mentality.
(Of course an AD&D frame of gaming mind isn't bad or wrong; I'm just stating a personal paradigm shift here).
Stuff like how dungeons and the underworld are viewed, as stated above; And a complete self-redesign on what constitutes the wilderness (although Wayne Rossi's seminal piece on the implied setting of OD&D was primary for the latter, really) and how it, too, is approached in-game.
These are only a couple of the things that really provided me with a very real epiphany as to how I'd like to approach my favorite pastime.
Maximum damage on the die on an attack roll of 20 is only one of a slough of wonderful little house rules that meshes well with a d6-centric system, but I still prefer to not use it and just describe any attack success wherein a damage result comes up a 6 as a' critical hit'.
...But just because I don't use it doesn't mean it hasn't been useful.
Philotomy's musings basically taught me something I've always read, but never really grasped or owned.
It taught me that Dungeons & Dragons is MINE.
And that I am free... Nay, encouraged... To make it that way.

Like many of the above posts:
I have learned from his view of the "mythic underworld" and that is the direction I am taking my dungeons henceforth.
I do full damage on a critical rather than double.
I LOVE his description of how abstract HP is and WHAT HP abstracts: skill, luck, stamina, and only after all that, physical well-being. I love that, it has totally changed my description of combat as a referee -- for the better.
Question: (probably for another thread)
Philotomy's Dungeon as "mythic underworld" + Rossi's OS+U&WA as Original Setting = what kind of over-all campaign-world description for 0e? Hmm. . .
