I know some mapmakers will share an "in-world" map with players by giving them an aged map. Has anyone messed around with other items to be brought out sparingly, passed around, and rehidden in the DM's treasure chest?
A danger might be railroading them to the special items, but this could easily be avoided by just having a few items handy and when the PCs find something of type X -- that's the one. An old key, an herbal "charm" bag hidden in someone's pack, a spell component, a pouch of [cheap] gems.
Anyone enjoyed this?
Has anyone had bad experiences with them, or felt they'd detract from the game even if used rarely?

If so, not really, though that would not be too difficult with all of the online resources these days if that's what you meant I used poems and riddles, partial information clue drops, all mental prop/instigators so to speak, a lot. Sometimes there are hasty sketches/illos I make I've also done computer illos and did one for a strange gate for those traveling to the Lost City of the Elders. In fact I made about 20+ illos for LCotE to be used at various times, but these fit with the locale's narrative of course.

Have you seen the Treasure Maps Jacquay did for Judges Guild?
Awesome. Like that there is a big chance a map to another treasure is in each treasure.
I don't think it is railroady. It's just information. They can act or not.
But it is a lot of fun.

This, I make extensive use of things like these mentioned above, including old, very hard to read map fragments, a few last words choked out by someone dying and overheard crypic conversation fragments and lots of others.

Righto! Grouped in what I consider "partial info/clue drops." : )

These are all cool. I meant more "inspirational" than strictly "informational", so I was imagining a different set of possibilities. Was glad to read about this stuff.
