The great thing about this is it confirms that his longer book "A New Ethos in Game Design" is still in the works. I did not think he would abandon 10s of thousands of words, but good to have it confirmed.

I have and read the Dave Arneson's True Genius book and still can't put my finger on it. I get Rob's arguments about what Arneson's unique contribution and innovation was but the hyperbole loses me. I get the Systems Theory angle but again, the mix of that with the personal anecdotes, the hyperbole and the makes it hard to figure out what parts of his arguments are based on Systems Theory or are assertions using Sciency language but ultimately not properly supported by the Theory. I'm still on the fence on whether I agree with him but he's been clumsy, hyperbolic and overusing System Theory terms where proper English would have been better or he's maybe right but he's hiding his ability to properly make and prove his case behind obscure System Theory language. For as far as I follow his reasoning he uses enough style, unsupported assertions, personal grievances and obfuscation specific terms that makes it easy for 'detractors' to dismiss and critique the whole premise. His way of arguing is almost "Gygaxian" in form and language . (i.e. verbose, hyperbolic and overly wordy)

I kinda of get most of it, but it is hard to parse with the language he uses. He would have been a lot better off to have used plain English and that would have made it much easier to translate to other languages, which if I were an author, I would hope people would want to have done. I hope I can work it out to get this and maybe that will shed some light on the first book. I really want to get A New Ethos in Game Design when it comes out, my impression is it should have a lot more examples that will shed light on the obscure language. I like Rob, we are essentially the same age and have a lot in common, but some things not in common. You have to really talk to him "right" and hit the "right" notes with him for quite a while to get past his guard where he will communicate more clearly. It is a lot of work. I don't/didn't always have the energy to do that.
