Ferdinand looks for tracks from the wolves that came close to camp.

Holter says that he and Hearne are setting up the new camp where they will spend some time building up their food supplies and scouting the route ahead to find wagon friendly terrain. He says they take turns making the extra trips back to the party. He says that any of you are welcome to join the scouting expeditions, if they think they can keep up, even if they only go part way and return it will build them up. He and Hearne are used to traveling long distances each day, it will be good for all of you to do that too, the old mules and the wagon should be the only thing that slows them down.

Ferdinand finds many tracks all about double the normal size of wolves he has previously encountered.

Holter says that he has seen them a few times over the last 5 years, both winter and summer, and that he hopes always to seem them before they are close to him. It is rather chilling to think that they may have watched you from close by without your knowing it.

Ferdinand looks back to where the tracks were, his eyes focused but his mouth showing just a touch of a smile. Sor watches his face, and for just an instant his is expression is that of a child looking to a parent to evaluate a situation. Then it changes to a neutral but mildly exasperated look. Replying to Holter, he says, "A few times...have you ever seen them attack?"

Holter replies that he has seen them take stragglers from behind the herd before. It is pretty devastating to watch, but they will give way before the great cats, unless they really have the cat(s) outnumbered.

You gather things into the camp for the night with the fires going and maintain your watches. The night passes uneventfully and the next morning you travel on to the camp reaching it about noon. You find that Hearne and Holter have been very busy and both meat and fish are being smoked and dried. This camp is also near a stream in a protected and defensible position. Hearne and Holter go hunting and come back staggering under the weight of the meat they garnered on their hunt.

That night wolves visit the camp again, but stay outside the range of the light from the fires.

The early the next morning Hearne and Holter get ready to go exploring to locate the best path for the wagon. Sor has already said he is going with them, is anyone else going to go? (hengest, arjen, JMiskimen, The Semi-Retired Gamer)

The wolves should not bother the camp in the daytime, we are a good sized group and as long as at least one of the mages is here we have the advantage. Besides the wolves know we are only taking part of the kills and leaving the rest behind. They are hanging around because of that. I think they are smarter than regular wolves though and wish there was some way to talk to them.

OOC: Ferdinand has plans, as do the eight men from town. The rest will need to make themselves known as to their actions. Obviously all are part of the preparations that the eight are making for the journey ahead, but this does not occupy the entire day. And there will be several days. You will all need to let me know if the composition of the Scouting Party changes.

Ferdinand, looking sometimes attentive and sometimes like he's tracking ghosts that are flitting around in the middle distance, helps with the general preparations, all the while keeping an eye open for any sign of the wolves, especially as it gets close to evening.

Mort says that we will need a lot of wood, so we need to gather dead wood from the surrounding area, we have axes to cut it up and we also need a certain amount of green wood too. Both directions on the stream we can fish out the larger pools of water. We have a lot of meat drying and it will take quite a bit of time to get it dried and smoke so it won't spoil. Both the meat from our last stop and all of the meat that Hearne and Holter already had drying for us. We should have enough for a couple of months plus the supplies that we brought along. There are tubers to dig along the way and berries other fruit to pick too.

While they are finding the way forward for us, we just need to keep going with our preparations.

Several of the other men join Rickard in cutting and gathering wood. The animals are being moved from good grazing spot to good grazing spot.
