Roderick and Biswil increase their vigilance.
Biswil: Not just an omen, something big or a number of person sized creatures have died and it might be that the perpetrator or perpetrators are still around, even if not this part of the woods might now have increased population of opportunistic predators looking for some easy meat.

An hour passes and you are now to the west of the point where the ever growing numbers of the Eaters of the Dead circle. You cross another small stream and allow the mules to drink and take a blow. You take note that the woods are eerily quiet.
You may or may not note that the eight men with you, look more alert.
Conanus and Reyner have moved up a few feet in front of the mules as they move out. Reimfreda and Bausan remain on either side of the wagon. Maugre and Dauid have dropped back about several feet behind the wagon.

You travel on for another hour and Holter shows up coming back to meet. He motions for silence and as you gather round he says we need proceed as fast as the poor old mules are willing go, we have a good place to camp. Gives instruction and 3 men (2 pairs of three alternate) and Slim rig ropes to aid pulling the wagon while Mort leads the mules to lessen the weight on the wagon, Slim and Mort switch places every now and again. Now you are traveling at double the pace the mules were plodding along at.
In another hour you reach camp which is a sheltered spot with a stream at the front about 40' below a cave entrance. Several fires have portions of mean cooking over hot coals. The smoke is drawn in to the cave entrance about 8 feet off the ground and you smelled neither the fire nor the meat until you were right no top of it.
The ten set busily to breaking things down for the camp, the livestock are watered and set to graze in some grassy areas away from the cave.

Sor does his best to assist the men, while Ferdinand dismounts and wanders about the campsite.

Roderick will erect a small makeshift shrine to St. Christopher (out of stuff laying around), one typical for off-the-path travel.
Biswil will circle the area, within sight and/or earshot of the camp, looking to see what creatures frequent this area (footprints, droppings, nests etc.)

As you gather to eat a meal of fresh roasted deer and roasted tubers (freshly dug), Hearne tells you that the wilds encroach closer to town all the time. Where the circling Eaters of the Dead gather is about a day and a half from town. Warnings have been ignored by the town "leaders", but the common folk keep their own watch and are ready to man the walls of the town at a moments notice. We will have to be alert from here on out. If one of the factions runs across us we will be of interest, though not enough to risk battle unless were are really outnumbered. We will be of more interest on our way back.
If all goes well, then when we camp tomorrow night we will be in an area where we should take some time to make the torches that you will need for light to brave the dungeons we travel towards.

Hearne continues, we will set up four watch periods, at least one of you (OOC:The PCs) should be on each of the watches, let me know how you want to organize that among yourselves.
Tonight will be
1st Watch Mort, Slim and Rickard
2nd Watch Conanus, Reyner and Sor
3rd Watch Reimfred, Bausan and Ferdinand
4th Watch Maugre, Dauid and Bosco

OOC: Note you will eventually notice that Hearne and Holter do not stand watch, there is a reason for this, they often (between scouting and hunting) will travel two to three to even four times the distance of everyone else each day.

OOC: is there time to ask questions before the watches begin? OOC: Yes OOC: Ok, if there are no questions, I will continue. If you have not yet assigned someone to a watch you should do so. Any Magic-Users or Clerics should have picked the spells that they usually pick each day and let me know at the beginning of any day where you change that. If no spell has been picked or designated, it will be assumed that none was picked or designated.
However, we are current with arjen Brother Roderick - Cleric Current spell designated is one Cure Light Wounds spell Bilwis Magic-User Current spells designated are two Sleep Spells
JMiskimen Anexos Twelve Magic-User Current spells designated are two Sleep Spells
The Semi-Retired Gamer Thomas Trask - Cleric Current spell designated is one Cure Light Wounds spell
hengest No spell using characters - that is the route I go as a player. If it is alright with you, I will assume each of your two Fighting-Men have chosen either the second or third watch.
Four Fighting-Men, Two Magic-Users and Two Clerics
No other member of the party has spells

Before it is totally dark, Biswil's will double check the cave entrance (30 feet inside, or less if that deep) to see if there are any signs of hidden faery or goblin doors, even if none are found he will try to put a "barrier" of about 3-4" high at the cave entrance consisting of twigs, leaves, moss and such in a way that it would be noticeable if someone came in or out of the cave (at the narrowest part within 10 feet of the entrance). Roderick will stand guard outside while he does that.

Roderick will stand guard outside while he does that. Hearne comes over to see what you are doing, once he finds out he offers to give you a tour of the cave. The cave extends back into the hill about 50 feet. The entrance to the cave is about 10 feet wide and 9 feet high and is roughly the same of an arched doorway, the first 20 feet maintain the 10 foot width and the back of the cave is roughly a 30 foot diameter circle. There is a hole in the ceiling roughly in the center of this area about 15 feet off the ground and it is dark and extends up and away. There is a decided breeze flowing into the cave and out the hole in the ceiling. You find no doors or other openings.
Hearne tells you that they have sheltered in the cave in bad weather many times and have never found any trace of any animals using it for a den, he knows not why.

Thomas Trask will take the fourth watch so he can be fully aware as the day begins.

Thomas Trask will take the fourth watch so he can be fully aware as the day begins. OOC: Clerics and Magic-Users are not normally on watch unless there just aren't enough able bodied men to do it. I also see that I missed that Biswil was a Magic-User and should not normally be on watch. arjen and The Semi-Retired Gamer please note. However, since no spells have yet been used that is not an issue yet; however, you may want to consider that going forward. However, if the party wants to put Magic-Users and Clerics on watch, I am sure the Fighting-Men will not complain.

The first night has passed uneventfully and in the morning you can no longer see the Eaters of the Dead in the sky. You also realize that a dark shadow seems to have lifted from the land overnight. You eat again of the meat and the tubers and enough dried meat remains that you can each carry along a hearty portion with you for the day.
Hearne tells you that he and Holter will again scout ahead to the next campsite and he instructs Slim and Mort about the way. It seems you will need to continue due west for a half day and then turn to the southwest.
He looks around and asks if there are any questions?

Thomas: "Praise be to The One God for a night without incident and a clear start to our day.".
