Without your light, it would be even darker here than it was in the moonless night up above. As you pass through an empty and ragged stone doorway, tiny, cold lights appear all around it. They look like nearby stars. Your eyes flick to look at them, and suddenly you see that a large chamber, all around you, is lit with the same cold glow. There are people here, many. At first you cannot understand what you see. You recognize men and women, but most are far taller than you. Their garments are strange to you and the chatter you hear is even stranger. Near the middle of the chamber is a kind of table. It looks to be made from neither wood nor stone. Several of those present are staring at it worshipfully or performing some sort of actions on its surface. A woman approaches you. Her eyes look wild with fear, but then you see that her mouth is smiling. As one of the men joins her, you reach reflexively for your sword and find yourself grabbing at nothing. Looking back, you see a passage cut from stone, but well-lit as far down its length as you can see. The woman and man begin pawing at your garments, as it seems to you, in awe. |
