...not an RPG topic at all, but is anyone here into draughts? American checkers or any of the other games that go by various "draughts" names, like International Draughts or Frisian Draughts?

I played checkers as a kid with two grandparents one on each side of the family. I played Chinese checkers way more though.

I'm not sure I ever really played checkers. I certainly have no skill at it, although people talk about it like it's a game for babies. Now I'm fascinated by this whole family of games.

I played checkers and Chinese checkers. I always wanted a Pente set but never bought one. I see them at one of my FLGS locations...

I have a vinyl chessboard. Forget saving -- I'm splurging on some checkers to use on the same board (though I could just play with any counters, I guess.

I was terrible at it, but I did have fun playing with a friend. Then the (superficially similar) Go is completely insane if you look at the rules and basic strategy. Frisian Draughts is ALSO insane.

Cool. Is Go the game with the tiles stacked in patterns and you match the designs to remove them? I can play it on the computer but I definitely don't know all the rules. The electronic versions won't let you make an illegal move...lol. if that's it, I love that game!

Mah Jong is what I was thinking of. I've been curious about Mah Jong, for sure. I understand it was big in some suburban areas in the US some decades ago. Bridge also interests me...

If you're familiar with the trick-taking games, the basic mechanic of Bridge will be familiar to you. I like that kind of game, but have never actually played Bridge. Supposed to be another great social game (or was when lots of people played it).

I only knew a few of them, but when they needed a 4th they would grab me, my partner was always a guy who was blind from birth. We always won, he was really, really good AND we played with braille cards. I realized the first time we played that one, as a blind man he could count cards perfectly AND when he dealt, he knew were every card was around the table, one hand in four of knowing every card in every hand is a massive advantage. We always won, but no one ever realized that to a blind man dealing braille cards was dealing them face up as far as he was concerned. They all just thought I was better than I really was. I also played double pinochle a lot, along with hearts and spades. My favorite was euchre.

Liked them both. That sounds like quite the advantage!

I have not heard them called draughts for over 60 years. I've never played them, haven't played any game that you can't play solo and learn solo. Now there are books and videos and computer games to learn things, but when I was a kid, if you didn't have an opponent you were kind of stuck.

Definitely true, it's possible to get experience now from playing against the most common device...wasn't true until pretty recently.
