Anyone familiar with Keith Laumer's Bolo series about self-aware battle tanks?
We may not be too far off...

I loved Keith Laumer's books, haven't seen one in ages. I also loved his Retief books. His other books were great too, classic author.

Enjoyed those stories and many of the stories that were inspired by them as well. But I don't think we've gotten past just copying things that sound right, assuming you're talking about current AI software. There's no belief or understanding in it, as far as I've heard.

Considering the prevalence of "deep fakes" created by AI and their use in aspects of our lives such as in customer facing chat bots ect. I can't help thinking we're on the cusp of that so called "singularity."

I don't think you can ever reach true "singularity," creating a soul is something we can never do. I think we can continue advancing the program until hardly anyone can tell the difference. The closer we get though the more dangerous it becomes. Once someone hooks one into a system that allows nukes to be launched bad things will happen.

I want one. Maybe they could replace Kit the car with one of these for a remake of Knight Rider.

The classic sci-fi stuff would really benefit from the special effects and video technology of today. Sadly, the (Hollywood) writing has drastically declined...

I have a habit of buying books and have done so for many years. As book prices have been rising, I've made it a habit to read an old novel before I let myself read a new one. I just finished "Deus X", by Norman Spinrad - in which the Catholic Church hires a Rastafarian hacker to help determine whether a passes-the-Turing-test-and-can't-be-distinguished-from-the-original copy of a high-ranking Cardinal living in an online world has a soul. He doesn't get access to Nukes, but he does end up taking over the Vatican City local area network.

My latest 'new' authors to hoard: Seanan McGuire and Leanna Renee Hieber. Different genres, but they've both written their own looming apocalypse stories that were hard to put down. No bolo tanks, however, just mathematician wasps and creatures from beyond.

I am not worried about AI, the worse they will ever be is what they are programmed to be. If automated weapons come for us it will be because some drunk on power elitist's had them programmed to do that.
