Copyright is a minefield controlled by bad people with bad intentions. We should have a very simple copyright law, trademark law and patent law. One: copyright runs for the life of the creator/author or for 30 years, whichever is the longest period of time. Two: copyrights always start with the creator/author - end work for hire. Three: copyrights can be licensed for a maximum of 10 years, after which a new licensing agreement is required. Four: licensing of copyrights are between the creator/author and other entities, sublicensing is prohibited unless authorized in the license and all sublicenses end on the same date the license ends.
Trademarks are always owned by the copyright holder and follow the licensing agreements. When copyright expires, the trademark expires and permanently ends.
Patents follow the same rules as copyrights, except the duration is 15 years from the date of filing, unless "the thing" has been under commercial use as a trade secret. If it has been under commercial use as a trade secret those years must be subtracted from the term of a patent. Use as a trade secret for 15 years or more means it cannot be patented.
