I saw this over on DF ( You might be an Old School Role-Player IF...) and I thought we could do our own take on it. You will note that I changed the title slightly. You may want to jump back and forth between this and theirs to see the changes I made, since I did not agree with all of theirs. 1. You roll 3d6 in order for ability scores, AND you know you can take any of the three classes regardless of your scores. 2. You still get excited about a magic sword. 3. You ask if the monster speaks "Common". 4. Your d10s are twenty sided. 5. You put your highest roll into Charisma because you know your going to need hirelings. 6. You roll to hit and the referee lets you know if you did. 7. You don't ask your hirelings to test magic items to see if they are cursed, because you know that will ruin your reputation if harm comes to them. 8. You value your reputation, because that greatly affects how people react to you in addition to your charmisa and furthermore, a bad reputation makes it both difficult and expensive to hire anyone. 9. You've been playing for three years and your excited about tonight's game because your so close to level 5. 10. You've been playing the same campaign for 20 years (or more). 11. Your character sheet is on a 4x6 notecard or on a single half-sheet of notebook paper. 12. You started with the woodgrain box and know the people with the white book are late comers to the game. 13. You know the Classes are Fighting-Men, Magic-Users and Clerics. 14. You know that The Strategic Review became The Dragon because you were there when it happened and your subscription changed. 15. You know old school is when all the weapons do 1d6 damage. 16. You know whoever shows up, plays. 17. You know that Greyhawk marked the first move away from 100% pure, unadulterated old school. 18. You know that old school means hobbits, ents and balrogs and it is the shibboleth that identifies the newcomers. 19. You know that character death means, roll a new character and equipment said character, name optional, and you are back in the game as quickly as the referee can work you in. 20. You were surprised when other games started being published and you wondered what was wrong with these people.

21. You have read, but don't run adventures modules. 22. You have no scripts and you don't run railroads. 23. You let your players attempt anything, even if it leads to certain death, if after you say, "Are you really sure you want to do that? And they say, "Yes!" Then you say, "Roll 10 consecutive natural 20s and if you succeed a miracle occurs and you live." 24. You draw your own rough maps with pencil and paper. Odds are you have little to no talent for art, but it gets the job done. 25. You know that Frazetta is the greatest old school artist of all and Erol Otus is the second greatest old school artist of all.

26. You know what a crayon has to do with D&D and you still have that original set of dice. 27. You went above and beyond and did not use that crayon, but used gold metallic ink and silver metallic ink. (Calligraphy pens available in the stores back in the 70s) 28. The best miniatures are/were made of lead and you were smart enough to use them safely. 29. You know the correct order of the ability scores will always be: Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Constitution, Dexterity, and Charisma. 30. You know that old school means the characters have abilities and skills are a dirty word.

31. You remember using carbon paper copies and mimeograph copies before photocopies became common. 32. You still remember getting the carbon on your fingers and you still remember that mimeograph smell and how those pages faded. 33. You know that smart players use hirelings and seek henchman. 34. You know how important it is to treat hirelings and henchman well and pay well. 35. You know that he who does not treat the life of hirelings and henchman as important, will soon be left all alone.

4. Your d10s are twenty sided. Numbered 0-9 twice with a + or - sign to show the difference AND everybody knows 0 is read as 10. All good stuff, The Perilous Dreamer!

The original dice did not have a + or -, that is why you colored them in with a crayon (I used metallic ink) so you could tell the 0-9 (i.e. 1-10) from 11-20.

I remember 0-9 being a thing but I guess I missed that +/- NOT being there. We always colored ours in for visibility since they had those. Good info.

Not sure why but those Gamescience "precision edge" dice just really appeal to me. NOT the prices these days however! I especially like the "ugly" colored ones lol. And the ones with a little bit of sprue left on them, they just scream "old school" gaming. And it's a good thing they clipped the points off the D4's otherwise there may have been personal injury lawsuits no doubt I see at my FLGS they (not Gamescience) now offer some new brand of really precision (and expensive) boutique dice with super sharp edges...

I'm right there with you. Those precision edge dice really catch my eye. The D6's look fantastic! I really would like a full set with those edges.
