I mentioned to The Perilous Dreamer that I had seen the new D&D movie, and he voiced his misgivings about it, but I gave him a rundown and he suggested I post a mini-review publicly, so I guess I will!
Like I am sure the rest of you had, I was having misgivings about going to see this movie because, well, the ones before were downright awful, but also because this one was so obviously based on modern versions of the game. I figured the movie would be ruined by its inclusion and I couldn't possibly enjoy it. However, I was having a moment where I just had to get out of the house and found myself at the theater, and the next thing starting was... the D&D movie, so I figured, why not?
So, I'm watching the pre-show. preparing myself to hate and internally mock it the whole time, and actually, I after just a few minutes I did hear reference to "Harpers" and "a red wizard's blade," so immediately I thought, "great, it's set in the Forgotten Realms," and I rolled my eyes.
But, the more I watched the more I enjoyed it. If you even remotely liked the Guardians of the Galaxy movies you will like this, because they are in the same vein. Yes, there are bits and pieces of newer editions (a main character is a tiefling; a major plot point is a sorcerer that is having problems attuning to a magic item), but you will also immediately recognize monsters and races. You will see spells being cast and recognize them, or hear them talked about by name and know what they were trying to accomplish. You will see antics that you would expect from any D&D campaign, and give you a real chuckle because we've all been there. In fact, there's fan service for older gamers who remember things from way back in the day (look who else is running around the arena with the main characters, for instance).
It's actually a lot of fun, and you will actually enjoy it if you go into it expecting to have a good time and realize it's a product of its time, so there will be 5e-isms and the combat is all wushu-inspired. Otherwise, it's basically like any other twelve-session mini-campaign you've ever played, rolled up into a two hour movie.
I give it four stars out of five!
