When I reread the Dying Earth by Vance a few years ago I was struck by the fact that the mages could cast spells across continents. How to translate it to D&D? I finally cracked it. Casting through Crystal Balls. The following is my new idea.
Pure balls must be located and ground to perfection. Each spell requires costly gems ,that are consumed by the casting. A MINIMUM distance must be used.Ready? Here we go.

Reveal Crystal Lvl One This spell tells you if the Ball you are using is pure and round enough to use. it can also be cast on raw crystal , to see if it is pure enough.

Open Crystal Ball Lvl 1
This spell is needed to prepare a ball for casting through. It must be used every time the ball is going to be cast through. The spell will allow the caster to use the ball for up to 1/hour per caster level.

Cantrip sender L2 Allows the casting of cantrips through the ball for 1 hour. It is most useful for sending spells through to aid a friendly. Common as they come in this rare magic

Ball Knock L4 Allows the sender to cast a knock spell through the ball.You must memorize this and the Knock itself

Lose slot(ball magic) L4 Causes to target to lose a spell slot(randomly determined) to have the spell in it voided and unusable for 6 hours

Control The Weak lvl 2 Gives a command to a zero creature. The command must be no more than 5 words and the task must be completed in no more than a single turn. Save vrs spell

Create and send Avatar L4 Creates a spectral being that you are giving your self to. While this is in existence, you can olnly cast the spells that have been dedicated to it(below) It has 7 HP ac 4 and functions as a fir it has the casting ability of a first level mage. You come with no items but can wield any weapon that you know how to use.If it is reduced to 0 hp it immediately. after the spell expires , you must save vrs spell at -5 or you permanently lose one CON point
You may load up to three first level spells into it from those you have memorized for the day

Signal Ball L1 This spell can only be cast to signal a single crystal ball that the sender wants to be in contact. It is normally used to tell the ball owner that it is time to begin a prearagnged time. Normally to cast spells that wil be beneficial to the caster. The singnal can be any single word the caster desires.

These spells require a minimaum rage of 50 miles and a gem that is 1000 coper pieces per level of spell

Poison L1,2 and 3
This spell causes food to become poisonous and do 1d8 damage per spell level. It takes effect after 2d3 hours, save for 1/2 damage

This is the spell that allows the user to see remotely. It has a duration of 1 hour per caster level
