I am going to Princecon this weekend

Princecon is held at the university by alum. The different thing it is that you play one character, gain magic and experience that you take from session to session. I am going to be Sgt. Fury and my moto is "Everyone comes home." will give a report when I get back. Oh.. the con is run continuous from Friday at 5 till Sunday at about 2 pm. I am just going Saturday from about 9 am till midnight.

So if you had the stamina you could literally play for 45 hours straight?

Yup 45 hours, I did it when I was younger. Princecon has a facebook group. The con book is up Morose. As a side note where do you live? I am in central NJ about 45 min south of Princeton.

PrinceCon I was officially known as the "Princeton Dungeons and Dragons Convention". The concept was a Superdungeon. Each GM produced a geomorphic map and room descriptions for a 3rd-level dungeon, and every GM had the entire packet. There were assistant GM's who acted as runners to inform GM's of the location of parties, and to enable everyone of which rooms had been looted. Thus, if section 3 was Howard's section, and Dave Parker's party was in room 07 of that section, a runner would go around Whig (where all runs were) and let each GM know that the Parker party was in room 307. When they left, Dave would pass the runner a note saying that the chest and the secret panel on the east wall were now open and empty. This did not affect the secret panel the party missed on the ceiling.

PC's met their (3rd-level starting) parties at a "hiring hall" run by the firm of Alchemist, Bard, Bishop and Wizard, Ltd, who would, for a share of the treasure, cure, remove curse, stone- to-flesh, etc., but could not raise. Since there was a restaurant on Witherspoon called the Alchemist and Barrister, the name changed accordingly, and the hiring hall got the proper name, Hireling Hall, which stuck.

The rules were the original three books, plus Greyhawk, plus Howard's supplemental rules sheet, which included preparation rounds for spells and a spell points system for magic users, but not for clerics.

Two classic PrinceCon moments from this convention were:

1) The squirrel incident. We had guest GM's running their own worlds, and in one of these a high-level MU named "X the Unknown" became convinced that a squirrel was actually a high- level wizard in disguise and was spying on them. So, he used Power Word Stun to disable the squirrel (which was just an ordinary squirrel chattering and eating a nut) and then used Telekinesis to dash him to death against a rock. This event has been immortalized as the example scenario in the original Paranoia.

2) The grand backstab. Since parties could interact, there was an opportunity for mischief. On Sunday, a party run by Steve Tihor (Ray Heuer and crew?) was fighting some monster, when a second party (Dan Gelber's group?) became aware of the fight. Hanging back they decided to wait until the optimal moment, then jump in and attack the weakened, treasure- laden PC's. As this happened, a third party (Scott Rosenberg and Greg Costykian) hung back, waiting to ambush the survivors. This kept the runner/coordinators busy.

The Second Annual Princeton Dungeons and Dragons Convention was different from all others. Each GM wrote a self- contained module, complete with characters, and the players played a series of disconnected adventures. Since each module could be rerun from the beginning, scores could be assigned to each party and prizes were awarded.

The reaction was that the Superdungeon idea was far better, and we never tried anything like this again.

The rules for the con were the then-latest version of Howard's rules, including the Parker non-quantized combat system (D20), and the use of prayer points.

Con Log -prequel

They are running 5th so I had to get a new players handbook. I am playing a fighter. Sgt. Fury-think US Marine NCO with smarts and charisma. I am going to wear all black with a Hawaiian shirt under it. The black sweater is for when I am on duty and ravel the Hawaiian shirt when I let my hair down.  I have my sights set on Best fighter

I am 1/3 great sword wielder 2/3 warlord. My coolest ability is that I can give another friendly an additional attack

A few thoughts overall

The administration gave the con group a bunch of money and it showed. It was only $15 and you got a free T shirt. They catered lunch and dinner. I never had to leave the building, which is a God send because it is very very far to any food. All of this was free. The rumer is that as 2 of the groups past away and left thier estates and life insurance as an endowment.

I have no shot at best fighter, it has been years since I played and it showed.May have a shot at a roleplaying award. 5e fighters are very complicated to play and I do not fully grasp them.Some notes on 5e next.

That's not bad at all for $15.

A curious part of 5e is relative power level Fighters are very powerful at lower levels. At 5th level you get 2 attacks. There is a thing called proficiency bonus. It is added to most of your  d20 roles. It is +3 at 5th and only +4 at 9th. So the characters are front loaded. My AC was 16 for the entire con. Just a curiosaty to me. OMG are fighters complex. I found wizards from past years easier..

Game 1

We were recruited to find an astronomer named Larry(he was a turtle folk). We traveled to the breadbasket of the solar system and discovered that the main town was deserted. It was in disarray and exhibited signs of being over growth beyond what we should have expected. About 3 months or so had passed in only a few days our time. The diary of a hotel manager revealled that a great deal of conflict had engulfed the town and the citizens had scatted away. We set off to an orc village to the north.

We headed off to the orc village and discovered a watermill that was inhabited by a bird man who had been seing visions and was quite unhinged. The weakling cleric pinshed him, convincing him that we were real. He said that he had seen Larry and the orcs were uncharacterily aggressive. off we wnet.

We found Larry and he wanted to continue north to find the sharrif. In to the deep woods we went. We were attacked by 4 probably 5hd or so. My friend and I hammered the orcs mercilessly and the orcs called for a halt in the fight. I got to use my warlord abilities all day allowing the paladin who had gotten in trouble.

The orcs said that the sheriff had beaten the orc chieften in a challenge to single combat and was now the head of the orc village. We went to the village lead by the head orc of the ones who had attacked us. We saw the sharif and convinced him to restart te town and we found a few more town folk. We went home through the portal/doorway.

Session 2

Our group of 3(Me , my friend Bob<Dragonborn Paladin, and the weakling cleric from the last game>) found a cat person who was looking for adventurers to save her planet. The planet was very very small and being overrun by a twisting metal  hedge maze. Her ship was a disaster and she could barly operate it.We got to the planet and decided we would go to the center of the maze and look for it's cause. We had to rappel down and lucky had enough rope to do it(about 200 feet) As we were going down, we discovered a cat folk monk climbing down too(a Pc that the dm had waved) I tucked the far too weak cleric under my arm(20 Strength on me)and rolled 1 28 to do this successfully.

On the planet we ran n  a tiiefling(Half Devil) that was acting like a zombie. The cleric pinched him and brought him back to reality, He lead us to the mayors mansion and found a diary of the mayor that was less than useless. I went to the bathroom irl and missed a lot of the set up for this next part. So somehow we were in maybe an observatory(who knows) that was covered by black slime where a male human was seated on a throne and was doing psychic damage to us.  The monk knocked him out and I cut him in half. The monk looked at me sideways and a heated exchange followed.As we stopped our brief exchange the black slime started reaching toward us and the Maw(the big baddy in the con)taklked to the dragonborn and the monk mentally and just gave a villain speech about surrendering something  he failed a save and could no longer grasp the concept of "light"(it was a lot cooler than it sounds At some point during all of this I intercepted a mirror that was going to hit the monk and greatly reduced the huge damage that was about to hit him, We drove off the Maw and saved the planet. Very very RP intensive. Very enjoyable

We arrived at a planet that was a zombie and giant spider filled fantasy Paris. We battled a shambling mound and arrived at a swank restaurant that had one of the sub mayors in We lost him as he fled through a large fire, an illusion. We charged through and found our selves in a ritzy dinning froom where a dinner placed  for 6. There were 6 of us and there was only the way  we came. I st down and spread a napkin on my lap and the rest of the party followed suit. WE were shown a menu that no one could read that white gloved invisible servants in  formal white gloves. after each course we made saves after each course with different miid  effects were to be had. At the end of the meal the sub mayor came through a secret door. Berating those of us that had not just dinned. We convinced him to come back with us. I am not doing justice to the meal encounter but loved the idea so much I am going to use it in Muk City.
