Read Magic
All Magic Users can read Magic of their Magic Tradition of the appropriate Levels. This applies identifying or casting a spell from a scroll or to a magical tome.
When trying to read Magic above the appropriate Levels, there is a cumulative chance of error.
For example a 1st Level MU has 12 out of 12 chance to read a 1st level spell. However, it is two steps for a 1st level MU to read a 2nd level spell which is normally not useable until 3rd level. So a 1st level MU only has a 10 out of 12 chance to use a 2nd level spell.
Another example
For example a 4th Level MU has 12 out of 12 chance to read a 1st level spell or 2nd level spell. However, it is 8 steps for a 4th level MU to read a 6th level spell which is normally not useable until 12th level. So a 4th level MU only has a 4 out of 12 chance to use a 6th level spell.
As for reading Magic of a different Magic Tradition, add four steps to the level of the spell being read. Looking at the last example, if it were a different Magic Tradition a 4th level MU trying to read a 6th level spell would have 0 out of 12 chances to use the 6th level spell and a 5th level MU would have 1 out of 12 chances to use it.

You should gather this type of stuff into your own supplement.

I really like this write up Morose and I like the added difficulty in casting spells higher than appropriate for your level. That is a great take and makes it so that you have to be pretty high level to even use a scroll with the most powerful spells.
