Detect Magic All MUs automatically Detect Magic 1st Level within 5 feet 2nd Level within 10 feet 3rd Level within 15 feet 4th Level within 20 feet 5th Level within 25 feet 6th Level within 30 feet 7th Level within 35 feet 8th Level within 40 feet 9th Level within 45 feet 10th Level within 50 feet 11th Level within 55 feet 12th Level within 60 feet 13th Level within 65 feet 14th Level within 70 feet 15th Level within 75 feet 16th Level within 80 feet and so on
The above is for potions, +1 or +2 weapons and other similar magic. More powerful magic can be detected as though the MU were two levels higher and Artifacts can be deteced as though the MU were 5 level higher.
Caveat: it is not until a Magic-User reaches 5th level that mastery of this ability allow him to 1) filter out party magic and 2) discern the direction of the location of the magic.

I really like this way of running Detect Magic. I like the idea that Magic-Users are sensitive to the presence of magic and that it grows stronger as they go up in level.

I agree as it makes complete sense to me. I've thought about doing something somewhat similar with Clerics. Instead of Detecting Magic, it would basically be removing Clerical spells as they are now and splitting them into Divine Powers such as Blessings and Curses. Blessings could be stuff like Heal, Cure Poison, etc. while Curses would be used against enemies. I've never hashed it out but I'm very interested in seeing how it would work. Obviously, the Cleric would begin play being able to heal a small amount, but it would grow larger and eventually cover a group of people. Of course, the curses would work the same except it would increase the amount of damage inflicted or the poison your enemy was infected with, etc.
