My best stats ever were rolled in front of a half dozen people with the refs dice while we were waiting for everyone to get there in college (several of us were always there 15-20 minutes before the game started.
Tartarian Paladin Rolled 3d6 in order
STR 18 100% INT 18 WIS 17 - I think Wis was the 17 CON 18 DEX 18 CHA 18
That ref, as a player, once rolled 7 natural 20s in a row in front of 16 people with the same dice that were rolling 1 to 8 for everyone else.

I used to have a player that tried to show up to EVERY new game with straight 18s and maximum HP & Gold or close to it. We started doing "session zero" before session zero was a thing. Everyone would generate their characters at this time. That just made me jaded about the whole uber stat block phenomenon. Meh.
Nothing directed at any poster in this thread. If GREAT rolls happen, they just happen BUT does it really happen EVERY time no one else is watching?!?!

If GREAT rolls happen, they just happen BUT does it really happen EVERY time no one else is watching?!?!Back in the day, when we started, we only had one set of dice and they belonged to the ref, so we all rolled at the table in a matter of course. Later after I started reffing I got a set too. No one else ever brought even d6s to the game one and then two sets of dice for everything. We did (each) have two d20s number 0-9 twice. I used metallic ink to color one set of numbers gold and one set silver. That was because of my eyesight, it made it easier to see what was rolled.

What I have done most recently, since about Year 2000 is that I have reverted back to the method in the rules, I roll up all the characters myself and then have a stack of pregens, so people can just start playing. These days games are too short to spend game time rolling up characters. No one has ever complained about it either.
