As noted the island is about 300,000 square miles in area. At the longest point it is about 1500 miles long in the roughly north-south direction. It is only vaguely rectangular with a fairly irregular shape. At its widest point it is about 400 miles wide and at its narrowest point it is about 100 miles wide.
The island is mostly wooded and it has a temperate climate. About 20% of the island is mountainous and it has quite a few rivers and is well watered.
