Part One
Rise of a Lion
I was at a gathering at one of the big distributors in Indiana representing the Overpower CCG. In the drunken haze of the after party , I made friends with a representative of L5R. We played a game of "Lunch money where I would scream "Ive Got A knife" and cracking everybody up. As the party came to a close, he said to m e ""I want to give you something" and he lead the way to his car. He produced a 300 card box of L5R cards and stumbled it to the night. I took them home to home in NJ , looked at them briefly and promptly forgot them.
Cut to a couple of years later
My FLGS had purchased another store. It went under quickly and as a result the L5R group moved to my store. They seeemed like a fun bunch of guys and over the next few weeks I became more and more interested in their presence. I remembered the cards gathering dust in my basement. So one day I grabbed the box and thought I might play.
The guys could not have been nicerer and quickly (in a nice way) smelled fresh blood. At this point I should point out that I had been playing The Bushido RPG and actually had a vocabulary of about 300 japaneses words. I always played samurai. So the guys in the strore quickly grabbed my box and started going through my box. I said"Tell me about the clans". They were pushing Scorpion and Crane on me because thet was what I had the most of. This became a monumental moment that could have sent me in a totally differant direction. The cards I had cried out "Scorpion". I have always liked the art on them. Art wise they are my favorite. So they briefly described the other clans. Eventually somebody said. "The Lion are big into bushido" It clicked instantly(insidentally I HATE the art on the Lions). My Rpg experiance said"That's my clan!". So instantly I had made my choice. Lion. So to protestests I headed to the cash register with a Lion starter aand about 5 boosters. There turned ou to be no Lions in my box. I wemt to another table and assembled for battle. The great bunch of guys had waited a total of about an hour and hahalf as I but on my katana.
The only thing I can remember about my deck is that I liked the Spearman and being forced into using a lot of non lions. They VERY nicely let me make the deck of only 20 cards each and battle began. I managed to destroy a single provence and my brave Spearmen served me well. Looking back on that deck I did a decent job but I should have let the peanut gallery help. They took it a little eaxsy on me but not one guy. It's not like he went after me but he is the one who killed me. I had a blast. I was hooked. I will leave you for now: The stronghold I had was Kitsu Tombs. Do you want to hear more?
