What are all of you all's thoughts on the ideal adventuring party composition with just the original three classes, Fighting-Men, Magic-Users and Clerics?
For a Party of Four - For a Party of Six - For a Party of Eight - For a Party of Ten - For a Party of Twelve -

Interesting thread! My initial thought on a part of four is to go with Fighting Men x2, Cleric x1, and Magic-User x1. I don't know if that's the "optimal" mix but that has the right "feel" for me. As for the other options, my first thought is to stick to that mix as close as possible with the increased numbers.

IMO groups are often Fighting-Man poor.

Not to derail the thread but it's always bugged me that Gary and Co. always talked up the need and value of Henchmen/Hirelings in a party. Apparently the more the merrier, and yet, they never explained how (or if) lower level parties managed to get any. Seeing as most starting wealth is spent in equipping one's character...

I think it's a great observation! This isn't derailing at all.

Bitd we played with such large parties that we never worried about it. We started with 12 players and soon averaged 16 players so buy the time they had enough money to buy horses or mules, they had enough to hire people. They would, at that point, mainly hire people to watch the horses, mules, wagons etc, while they were in the dungeon and, in the wilderness, to drive the wagons, setup up camp and care for the livestock.

That would be Glorious! makes sense with such large parties BiTD and Henchmen/Hirelings would be a ready source of replacement characters in that inevitable circumstance of encountering (insert horrific encounter here...)

Coming back to this thread, I know it will not happen this year. But I am hopeful that in 2024 we can plan to get together a bunch of us and game together in person.

If there's any possible way I can make it to this, then I definitely WILL! I am hoping I can work things out financially by next year. It would be a great way to celebrate the 50th Birthday of OD&D. Also in my case 50th years since graduating from high school.

For a Party of Four - This group is a little light for any kind of expedition but doable. 2FM, 1MU and 1C. Hire as many fighters as possible. If utilizing Holmes scroll writing rule, then create a few scrolls and create Holy water flasks, if time isn't a factor. MUs should share any new spells found by transcription. For a Party of Six - 2FM, 2MU and 2C. Rinse and repeat as above. For a Party of Eight - 3FM, 1E, 2MU and 2C. Again, as above, but the Elf adds some flexibility. This is a good setup. For a Party of Ten - 4FM, 2E, 2MU and 2C. Should be plenty of gold now for significant number of hirelings and scrolls/Magic for becoming a force to be reckoned with. For a Party of Twelve - a bit heavy, but manageable. 5FM, 2E, 3MU, and 2C. With hirelings, magic, and good tactics, few goblin dens will survive. As usual, YMMV. JM.
