Things to do 1. Creating a character sheet (or note card) is super easy. 2. Creating the character 3d6 in order 6 times for the character and 3d6 one more time for starting gold. 3. I just give them all max hit points at first level, so 6 Hit Points each, plus the constitution bonus, if any. 4. Select Race, Select Class, Select Alignment 5. Write down spells if any 6. Select Equipment
Things they don't have to do 1. They don't have to write down saving throws, they roll the die and I tell them the result. 2. They don't record AC, they write down what they have, for example Leather and Shield. I tell them if they get hit or not. 3. To attack, they roll and I tell them if they hit, no need to record any data around this. 4. They don't need access to the rulebooks, aside from buying equipment and that initial writing down of spells 5. They don't have to worry about game mechanics, those are kept almost completely behind the screen
Things good players either know or quickly learn 1. As adventurers they work out intelligent tactical approach to exploring 2. Marching formation 3. Looking back, up and to the side, not just straight ahead tunnel vision 4. Making sure they have light and keeping track of supplies 5. Searching for secret doors and traps 6. Listening at doors 7. Opening doors carefully and having preplanned what they do if there is a monster or something else waiting on the other side 8. What to do with captives, tying them up, interrogating them
What would you guys add to these lists?

instead of rolling for starting old and choosing equipment I use a 3d6 'starting equipment" table (as found here: www.necropraxis.com/2012/07/20/odd-equipment/ ) players can opt to roll for gold instead or roll on the table and make minor swaps between rolled equipment and table. This gives players the option of starting very quickly. I like the idea of not giving the players their to hit target, AC and saving throws. I give starting MU and cleric access to all the 1st level (3LBB) of their class so I a a single page of spells (1 page per class) to hand out when needed.
