So magic users spend most of their money on spells and research. And fighters will start spending big when they acquire lands and holdings later. So during the early levels how much spending and on what do the pc's in your games spend gold? Do they spend a lot on carousing? do they just hoard it all?

I hoard it. Those castles are EXPENSIVE! Sit down with plans of Chinon or Harlech and price that SOB out!

Yes it is highly expensive. Curious how do you hoard it? Do you bury it somewhere? I'm guessing it's hidden as you can higher npc's to guard it you can't trust them!

Merchants ran banks in the Middle Ages, both German and Italian. Letters of credit were a known thing.

@gronanofsimmerya, yes, saving for investment in a barony seems to be the main goal. Also, some characters try to invest in magic item production. In austinjimm's Planet Eris campaign, we have a kind of implicit interplanetary teleportational banking system. As long as PCs are in a lawful settlement of sufficient size, we can usually assume there is a "branch" available (or at least a MTM (magic-teller machine)).
