I am aware of Lewis' The Space Trilogy consisting of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength but I've never read them. I know we read a Narnia book in class and could buy them from the book fair when I was a young child but I'm not sure if I ever saw any of these books available. Have any of you read them? If so, do you mind sharing your opinion about them?

I have read the first two. I'm not sure they'd be everyone's cup of tea, and it's been a while (20 years), but I liked, didn't LOVE, both. They may seem dated now. Space fantasy in which the protagonist deals with social and religious questions. Way better for some adults than Narnia, I think.

I read them in college back in the 1970s, I thought they were pretty good. Another thing I read over 40 years ago.

Occasionally, I think about rereading Narnia, but I wonder if it would spoil the magic by reading it as an adult.

I wasn't exactly dismayed, but they were not engaging in the same way. Lewis's Space Trilogy (at least the two I've read) don't really offer magic so there's not a lot of magic that can fail. At least in the first one, it's kind of mid-century space travel trappings (minimal) and then extended learning about alien cultures in a way that is meant to teach something about human culture. When I was 18, I found it entirely engaging. I'm actually not sure I've read it since, but my memories of it are pretty vivid. The second one, Perelandra, I remember as really very beautiful, with things I could never have dreamed. Space-fantasy meets religious and spiritual speculations. Again, I was kind of young, but I remember it being plenty cool. Would be very interested to hear if you read either of these.

Ours need to be renewed every few years, you have to at least verbally confirm that you still live in the area, I think.
