I know I read somewhere that Dave Arneson wasn't happy with the mega-hps that characters began accumulating and iir preferred that characters become more difficult to hit as they gained levels. I'm curious about this concept. Like, what would happen to the game if characters didn't roll and add a HD's worth each level? What would be the mechanic to generate hps if the one die per level wasn't in play? What would the ranges be? would there be such differences between the classes?
So...
1. Does anyone have any source materials (articles, interviews, anything...) verifying this?
2. Did he ever, officially, state what he felt the maximum of hps should be?

It's in the FFC, IIRC.

Ahhh, yes... that would be the place--since I don't have it!

Dang! great document. Thanks for the link, Rob.
It looks so....geez, like an attempt to simulate combat; if one wants such. I find it way to over-thought, for my own tastes. It's fine if one wants to grind that much, but at my age, I'm looking for a simpler-- 2 rolls at most-- mechanic to deal with what I want.

But there are some nuances in there that are scaleable downward/reworkable if one wants to fiddle with it.
