You're given control of an intellectual property of your choice. What do you do? Dungeons and Dragons. 1st thing is I try to get a licensing deal done for everything Barsoom related so all the monsters in the tables can have descriptions and stats listed and also for Hobbits, Ents and Balrogs. 2nd is I start work on splitting the D&D and AD&D lines again. I do a rewrite of OD&D using what we have learned from all the clones and make ready to play version of the three books and update the original four supplements. Throw some money at Rob Kuntz to get him to do the Kalibruhn supplement that was originally proposed. Also get him to finish the proposed book and publish it. The book on Arneson he did write, give him money to convert that to a 6th grade reading level and make it accessible to modern audiences. Issue 6E as AD&D 6th Ed. Do a really basic clean version that is pretty compatible with AD&D 1st Ed and have a ton of optional rules clearly labeled as optional. Go back to all the modules and redo them to minimize the railroading and give advice to foster DIY and MIY gaming. Issue products that lend themselves to DIY and MIY gaming. Things with lots of options that lead people to originality. Buy a lot of the OSR stuff that will work well with this vision. That is a start off the top of my head.

Okay, The Perilous Dreamer is already doing better than I would do with D&D, so I choose Middle-earth. I cancel all current adaptations and take a ten-year break from them, instead promoting grassroots reading of Tolkien and of his own reading, study of the languages he studied (esp. Old English and Old Norse). I put some of the money the estate has to throw around into cost-effective introductory materials that are distributed free in pdf and pay competent teachers to teach non-nonsense classes in then for all comers. Kids, adults, any line of work, anything.

We create a "Tolkienian edition," print it on good paper, bind it well, and give copies out to academic and public libraries. PDF as well, PWYW and proceeds go to a rotating list of charities.

I like this and the ten year break from adaptations is probably a good thing too, because it would take ten years to write some new adaptations and do them right.

Let me add here that I would also try to get a licensing deal for ERB's Pellucidar and Amtor (Venus) and for Tarzan's Lost Worlds. Also for REH's stuff. Then I would write D&D supplements around these things.

You're given control of an intellectual property of your choice. What do you do? One of my ideas would be to get control of the Palladium Books game lines. I would most likely make some - most likely many - of the diehard fans angry but I would make changes. 1. I would collect all of the different core rulebooks from their game lines with the intention of creating ONE core MEGAVERSAL RULEBOOK that offers a consolidated listing of all rules used in every one of their games. The game lines suffer from bloat right now. There's a ton of similar skills and combat is NOT crystal clear; many people have made house rule adjustments and they are comfortable with it but it's not easy to follow. If something needs to be different for a particular game line, then it would be addressed in the setting book for that game. For example, if there is no MDC in Palladium Fantasy then it's spelled out in the opening section of the setting book. Another example would be requiring a 17 or higher to hit a zombie with a head shot in Dead Reign. 2. I would restart their game lines by releasing new setting books that provide familiar yet different experiences from their previous versions because they learned lessons from the past and implemented changes in those game lines and settings to correct the course. 3. Bring back The RIFTER quarterly magazine. 4. Develop a consistent and clear fan policy that encourages web sites, blogs, and fan pdfs.

In DC comics world? What would that have to do with all the Superheroes? Star Wars Lets try again mao . 1. What would you do with DC comics in regard to their Superhero lines - that is one intellectual property . Then in a separate post 2. What would you do with Star Wars - that is one intellectual property . This would be what the OP was asking of us.

DC Comics
1) Lower the over all power level, Superman can move the planet I'd like him powered down to be able to pick up an aircraft carrier and fly a little w it and it would be difficult for him.
2)make it a little clearer that Aquaman has big time super strength, I didn't realize this until I was in my late 20s
3) re do the Invasion super series (alien Invasion), and have the DC universe damaged and recovering
4) Take Batman out of the JLA, give him his own group(Batman does not play well w others) Have Nightwing take his place
5)Totally give up on Artists writing
6) a huge budget 3 part, faithful adaptation of Frank Miller's Dark Knight series w Bruce Willise as Batman(Batman in the series is about 60 and Willum Defoe as the Joker

Great casting! I remember when people thought Michael Keaton was a crazy choice, but it worked out. Willem Defoe as the Joker is something I would definitely like to sew!

An idea I've toyed with in my head from time to time is a horror re-imagining of Oz. Admittedly, I don't know enough about the Oz books at all to even attempt something like this myself, but I dig the idea. I have no solid plans, so I'm just spit balling here but a few ideas that come to mind are listed below.
1. Dorothy could be a "final girl" from a horror story, but her escape involved her winding up in Oz.
2. Maybe the Cowardly Lion could be a werewolf?
3. Maybe the Tin Man could be some sort of living puppet or an automaton of some sort?
4. The Scarecrow could be a human under some sort of curse maybe?
5. No songs being sung by the cast in this version, but the soundtrack would be appropriately flavored hard rock music.
6. The horror would be with jump scares, reveals, and psychological instead of gore.
7. The Wicked Witch will be transforming the land of Oz into a twisted version of itself like the Queen brought Snow to Narnia.
I've only watched The Wizard of Oz. I've never read any of the books so that's all I have at the moment. Maybe I'll do more with this someday.
