I bought Thompson's Drawing and Painting the Undead on a whim some years ago at a gallery in... Manchester, I think? Anyway, a guidebook to producing art with drawing tablets and Photoshop is less than useless to me as a guidebook, but Thompson's creations and characters are inspiring and any one of them could have an adventure hung around its neck. Examples of Thompson's work here, and discussion of how to use one of them for desolate survival horror adventuring (though not OD&D, blasphemy!) here.

Good stuff! Manchester heh? My wife lived and worked in Manchester for many years. It's all about good narrative--if there is none there are no reasons to build characters other than as cross-communicating channels between party members. When one gets into a solo adventure they really appreciate the specific narrative that has to evolve in order to sustain the building plot, as the DM has to be more specifically oriented to the details in those cases. And this is where all of those DM's ideas that were otherwise backgrounded can leap to the foreground.
Thanks for posting!
