I remember seeing ASL on the shelves and I know it has a reputation as being thorough so does anyone here have any experience with it?

I am obviously amongst my people here. I remember many ads for this game and reading about the experiences of players of the game. Never played myself.I was young in it's heyday and not mature enough (IMNSHO) for the fiddly-bit nature of wargaming rules. Also never had the opportunity to connect with any wargamers who might have provided some guidance either. Lost opportunity I guess. Risk is definitely more my speed for a wargame LOL. Played Axis & Allies once and it almost came to blows due to a number of players new to the game who were suspicious of the one veteran possibly taking advantage during the "teachable moment." No doubt the preconception that the Allies would always overcome the Axis likely had something to do with it as well.

No doubt the preconception that the Allies would always overcome the Axis likely had something to do with it as well. I never got to play any wargames and I am even now not much for to many rules, I much prefer more open games. But Risk, I love Risk! Back in childhood before I ever heard of the game or any wargame, I and my siblings played our own made up version of what is basically a homebrew mashup of Risk and Axis & Allies (from what little I have heard of the game). In college we expanded the risk map with a sheet of poster board and drew in Oceania, by adding New Zealand (not on the old maps) and Hawaii and eight other island groups and then connecting them to Australia, Japan, China, Western US and Argentina. It really changed the whole strategy of the game.
