Do you have an interesting story about what your user name means or how you picked it?
Mine is pretty simple. I started off using "Karnak" for my RPG forum name. It was an old barbarian character of mine. When I started my gaming blog I was searching for a name that was appropriate and easy to remember. After a little bit of thinking and brainstorming it occurred to me thatbI am "basically retired" from gaming these days because I have very little opportunities for it so then I thought of the term "semi-retired" and it was as simple as that.
Great thread, The Semi-Retired Gamer! Sometimes I've found myself wondering what's behind different user names. I've used a few different user names on different boards over the years. "Necromancer" was something that I came up with when signing up on the ODD74 board last autumn. I figured I needed something in English, and I've always been fascinated by necromancy and the undead in RPG's and fantasy literature. So there you have it!
I used to be known as Julian Grimm. However, under that name I engaged in behavior I am not proud of so I decided a fresh start was needed. After watching Something Wicked This Way Comes and reading about a malevolent spirit in an old Shadowrun book I chose Mr. Dark(e) as a new name. On some forums I did not include the 'e'.
When I was in Sumatra teaching English ages ago I bought flying foxes that people were going to eat and let them go. Then people there thought I was a vampire, then I returned and worked night shifts for two decades, so the bat thing stuck.
Back a few years ago I decided to join some forums, but I had an employer at the time that I wanted to make sure was not in my business, so I created a nom de plume, Halenar Frosthelm and the associated screen name The Perilous Dreamer. I went through a lot of names and screen names before I got the sound I wanted and the image it created in my mind of someone strong, adventurous and creative.
I was huge into the Sailor Moon fanfiction scene in the 1990's, had a well-regarded website and went to a few conventions. Sailor Jupiter's first name is Makoto, and I needed a handle on a board, so I chose Mako-fan

This surely must be one of the coolest explanations behind a user name I've ever read!

It's something to do with The Sisters of Mercy, something to do with the Empire in Warhammer FRP, something to do with Germany and mostly because it's pretty similar to my real name and if you're going to give yourself a nickname it's best not to push your luck.

I was just looking for something short and unlikely to ever be used by anyone else, so that I'd be able to use it on every forum I registered with. Thus Vile was born.
For a slightly more amusing story, I used to have a different avatar (before I switched to my Dreamscape Design logo). I kind of looked like the graffiti from "V" for Vendetta, which worked because "Vile". But it was actually just a pixellated photo of bird pooh - one of the very first photos I took with my very first digital camera. It immediately showed me how useful the things were, because without it I would never have been able to record that near-miss moment, courtesy of a dive-bombing avian, which ruffled my hair in passing but luckily landed on the pavement instead of my head.

Being a fan, I actually wondered about if there was a connection to The Sisters of Mercy... Now I know! Welcome!
(My choice of smiley for this post was obviously deliberate concidering the topic...)

Looks a bit too chipper really.

Man, Necromancer, your avatar pic is so cool! You should put that one up over at ODD74 as well!
Oh, I intend to do that, tetramorph! I have always loved that pic, but then again I think the artwork Michael Whelan created for the Elric books are just fantastic. This piece was actually used for the cover artwork of Drakar & Demoner Expert (my game of choice, back in the day, being the first expansion set for that game), while the second edition of the basic rules employed the "Stormbringer" artwork and the second expansion set featured the artwork for "The Sailor on the Seas of Fate". Curiously enough, since the games didn't have anything to do with Elric, really. All those pics - they truly are fantastic. But now I start to derail...
The Tetramorph is the traditional name for the four-living-creatures seen in vision as a single composite being.
I guess, in D&D terms, it is kind of like the ultimate Lawful "Monster." As opposed to the Great Red Dragon.
I've always been fascinated with it and I have NEVER found it previously taken in any internet context!
Very cool!
In my current technically-running-but-we-never-really-play OD&D game, I've actually got a tetramorph sitting in the dungeon waiting to be discovered. The campaign takes place in a quasi-fantasy version of the college, and so I designed the dungeons to include lots of puzzles and ideas drawn from the statues and iconography scattered all over the college building (one of which is a huge relief of the four animals of the Evangelists in the chapel).
Mine is a character name of sorts, as well. I used to go by Raizenbrayne quite often, which has for years and years been my go-to name whenever I create a Magic-User. I was hard pressed to come up with a name on the spot and found inspiration in a nearby box of Raisin Bran cereal.
Starbeard is taken from A Beard of Stars, Tyrannosaurus Rex's fourth and final album before becoming 'T. Rex' and going into the glam thing. I have an intensely soft spot for early progressive rock and 'pre-prog' psychedelic fantasy pop in general, and in particular I've always felt that Tyrannosaurus Rex's music really fit well with the whole pathos of OD&D. Sometimes when I'm in the mood I like to describe D&D in musical terms that way: if AD&D is like Yes and King Crimson, OD&D is more like Tyrannosaurus Rex, or Sid Barrett.
I also will use Starbeard as a character name a lot. Originally he was a centaur druid, but now I'll use it for any magic-capable character for which Raizenbrayne wouldn't fit.
Incidentally, my profile picture is the record cover from a Tyrannosaurus Rex single, 'King of the Rumbling Spires', for obvious reasons of fitting thematically with the username.

What a coincidence! Rad!

When I was in high school, I intended to write an epic fantasy novel. The main character was named Cadriel. I used it as a screen name on America Online and I've used it on gaming forums ever since. I've made a few attempts at writing the novel but I don't really want to write epic fantasy any more.
When I first joined a forum (one for homebrewing beer) I picked it since it kinda fit with the brewing tradition. Now I like it particularly because it's short.
Ironically, I've never played a monk PC in a game.
My favorite author is Joe Abercrombie and my favorite character in his books is Logen Ninefingers nicknamed The Bloody Nine.
There are few men with more blood on their hands than me. None, that I know of. The Bloody-Nine they call me, my enemies, and there’s a lot of ’em. Always more enemies, and fewer friends. Blood gets you nothing but more blood. It follows me now, always, like my shadow, and like my shadow I can never be free of it. I should never be free of it. I’ve earned it. I’ve deserved it. I’ve sought it out. Such is my punishment.

So, Franciscan or Dominican, or something else? (If I may ask.)
