Satanic panic! Good thing that no heavy metal music was playing either...

Well, there are other cultures around the world (that predate Christianity)where this number has absolutely no religious significance whatsoever. So, from a Hindu, Shinto or other perspective, we might be safe.

What do you get when you flip 666 to 999? An upside-down BAKE!

So I'm wondering...for Atheists, do they celebrate this # as a birthday?

The whole Satanic panic thing is surreal for me because I never heard of it until I had been online for quite a few years. I first went online about 1990 but had very limited access from work till about 1997 and then changed jobs and had no internet access that was not work related and then had dial up and did not really gain full access with broadband until 2009 and that is when I first heard about the Satanic panic. If I didn't know people were telling real stories due to all the documentation available about it, I would be sure it was fiction. It still seems ludicrous that anyone went there with it.

I remember hearing little beeps and boops of satanic panic back in the 80s when I was a little kid. I don't think it ever really caught on where I lived, though. Read a book last fall called Dangerous Games: What the Moral Panic over Role-Playing Games Says about Play, Religion, and Imagined Worlds that was not bad, though nothing you need to read. The one thing I quite liked was the assembly of evidence that gamers (like most humans) are well aware of the difference between games and the rest of reality, but many of the panickers were genuinely confused about this. The whole thing is bizarre, yes.

I'm very intrigued by religion and have studied several myself; anything from Christianity to modern Witchcraft. It's just a subject that grabs my attention. Would you care to elaborate on your beliefs? No judgement and/or no offense if you do not. Feel free to PM if you would prefer.

The most disappointing thing about it was that a few of these people were pretty intelligent and open minded in most other aspects of life but just failed their disbelief check on that one. Ridiculous!

Maybe if we meet at a convention in Europe or the USA someday, as it will not even be included in my memoirs (if I were to publish those, which I probably will not do). Keep on believing!!

Which always struck me as odd. We are supposed to have freedom of religion, satanism is a religion is it not? The thing I remember about the satanism scares is all the stories of human sacrifice that ran wild and then were later debunked. The human sacrifice panic is what moved it beyond the pale.

Well...perhaps we've exhausted the point of the topic. SCENE: Cowboy riding into the sunset on his horse with his gal astride the saddle on his lap. Fade to black...

That's always a good thing. Too much can be misunderstood over internet forums which can lead to pointless arguments and nothing of real substance learned when it comes to beliefs.

We also had our share of the satanic panic around here. Quite odd, actually, and - needless to say - silly beyond belief. Rumour has it that the writers and publishers of the (in)famous Kult RPG were excommunicated by the pope, or something like that. Rather pointless, if you ask me, since Sweden isn't a catholic country... There was also this poorly written and horribly researched book presenting a conspiracy theory of the roleplaying community as a secret, Satan-worshipping, neo-nazi terrorist movement. Oh, brother...

We at TSR were waiting for the MM (moral majority) to begin down the historical list by including kids who play "cops & robbers" as the future sociopaths of the world...

666 = Sun in Magic Square mysticism so Hail the Sun God.
Note my name heh.
My best friend in grade school & junior High got beat by his dad often & a lot of it stemmed from roleplaying. But I wasn't a "normal" kid & fed the Satanic panic with my dad. I was a long haired Metalhead geek, who loved fantasy RPGs, novels & such; sat in front of my dad & step mom & read the Satanic Bible - oh boy the look I got but he let me keep reading it...I was my mom's mess to deal with. But when my brother started to want to play several years later my dad said no, but my brother eventually broke down his resistance. Here is one of the songs I'd sing along with to the great annoyance of my parents:
