I'm apparently in the minority here. Back when I started with the Moldvay basic there's a paragraph in there that talks about the DM only rolling damage. This is the way I've done it since I started playing. My original group has been used to this. But as I started encountering other groups I've noticed that players rolled their own damage. OD&D doesn't specify so for those of you that started with OD&D I'm curious as to how you do damage in your games. Recently I've been allowing players to roll their own damage dice just to see how it affects game play. I've always been of the attitude that the players should interact and engage in the game world not the rules, so this is a bit of a different experience for me. So how do you or have you handled damage rolls for players?

Players always roll. Just could not take that 'thrill' away from them. But I understand the 'DM always rolls' situation.

Players roll damage--they like rollin' them bones...

I've always let the players roll their own damage.

Back when we only had one set of pale blue polyhedrals I rolled everything. Now I also let them have a shake, rattle, and roll.

I've always wanted to run an all-GM-rolling game, but I'm sure my players would revolt. (But it would be so much quicker!)

Since I'd be rolling stuff like surprise and things that they should not know directly I got to give them damage rolls.

I roll the players. Sometimes they have cash in their pockets.

I roll the players. Sometimes they have cash in their pockets. Remind to let you know up front I'm not caring any money if I play in your game.

Damage caused to the players I roll and damage the players cause they roll.

Damage caused to the players I roll and damage the players cause they roll. That's the Spirit! (TM Eisner Estate) Why damage player characters when you can damage the players directly?

Damage caused to the players I roll and damage the players cause they roll. Same here, I should've clarified that in my previous post, as rereading it it sounds like they roll for all damage, but do not.
